Do you think its normal?
« on: June 21, 2011, 01:55:44 am »
Dear all

I diagnosed with AIDS one month ago my CD4 counted 188 and my VL 79000.

On May 2011, I started with Combivir and Kaletra (2 pills of Combivir and 4 pills of Kaletra daily) after one month of my medication ( on June 2011) I tested my blood and I found that my CD4 increased to 370 and my VL is undetectable .

Are my latest results normal compares to the old one? My CD4 increased 182 in one month, and my VL undetectable in one month also, I have read that I need more time to get these results.

Thanks

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis but welcome to the forums. I'm new hear and still need to take my first lab test after starting treating 2 months ago. I've seen graphs around of other guys on the forums and it seems that HAART works differently for everyone. Some tend to obtain an UD viral load sooner than others.

Have you mentioned this to you ID doctor? If so, what was his/her reaction?

Well being UD and having an increased CD4 count is a good thing. Best thing to do is to wait until your next lab test and see if you still have a UD viral load and perhaps increased CD4 cells.

I'm still very anxious to see if there was a better change in my numbers! Hope the meds I'm taking (Combivir and Sustiva) will favour me ...

I'll have to wait and see!

Any reason your doctor chose Combivir/Kaletra?

The only reason why my doctor chose Combivir/Kaleta because in my country there is no other choice , we don't have other HIV med.

If i change my med do you think i will have drug resistance ?

Why do you need to change your meds if you're already UD? It's the same thing in my country, the options were either Combivir and Sustiva (3 pills a day) or Combivir and Kaletra (6 pills a day) - I chose the first regimen and left the PI's for a later stage if needed.

No. Changing your combo won't give you resistance.

Combivir/Kaletra is a good first line choice, but some people have bad side effects from it. You can be assured that it will suppress the virus. It might make you feel a bit ill. Don't be worried if you get bad headaches, nausea and diarrhoea.

Such side effects are normal for that combination.

Remember that side effects are much better than the effects of untreated HIV infection.

I am also on Combivir - Kaletra 6 pills/day combination as the first treatment and am doing fine.
Of course there are some side effects, specially with the digestive system, but if you look after your meals won't be a big deal.

And one thing about Kaletra, from what I know, it's the only drug, or one of the few, that are able to clear the virus from our brains, so it's a good thing.

Anyway, welcome to the Forum, keep it light and easy.
There's too much confusion.

I don't know if this is true.  What about other Hiv drugs? Human brain is one of the reservoir area of the virus.
