Age at diagnosis?
« on: January 17, 2009, 11:00:33 am »
While reading the forums and particularly on the poz.com personals I see there are quite a few guys who are in their 40's 50's...but, they were almost exclusively infected 10-15-20 years ago. I was 56 when iI was diagnosed last April. While I benefit greatly from the experience of others, regardless of age and diagnosis date --it would be nice to chat with anyone who is in the same boat  ie. 50's and newly diagnosed.  Any suggestions on how to connect. I realize it is a relatively small population as most 'newbies' are 20's - 30's.

Just turned 48 so it is just a year now .... Pretty shocked as I never felt I did anything unsafe... Which is why I never thought to get tested....

I was diagnosed HIV+ when I was 40 in 2006.  My last test before that, which was negative, was in late 2002 to early 2003.  I ended up with an AIDS diagnosis in Dec. 2006.

Was diagnosed at a young 57,  but now feel like I am getting much older.   And can I blame all those aches and being tired, etc, etc on HIV and not "Older Age"? (61 now, and going on meds in Feb)

I'm 38 and was diagnosed with AIDS this past Aug. I don't know exactly when I got HIV infected nor by whom, but based on my behavior history it had to have been at least 8 years ago. I hope I'm lucky enough be one of these guys who survives on into their late 40's, 50's or beyond with HIV.

I was officially diagnosed at the age of 29 in 1993 although suspect I was infected for at least two years. I am now 45. At the time of my diagnosis, doctors wanted to immediately start me on AZT. At the time it was the only available drug. Since I was in good health otherwise, I decided to play the waiting game while I was in denial.

In 1996, I was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome a neurological ailment and spent five months in various hospitals near death. I had to officially retire from work but after two years I returned although I still use a wheelchair. I walk some but cannot hold out for great distances.

Fortunately for me, this is the time the first Protease Inhibitors became available.

Hi:  I was diagnosed in June of 2002 after testing negative in February of 2002.  I felt that I hadn't done anything risky but told a friend that I'd do a mail-in test if he would.  He had never been tested and I was worried about him.  Guess what....he returned a negative and I was positive.  I was 50 and knew better.  I'm 56 now.  Talk about feeling STUPID...and it still embarrasses me if I have to give out this info to doctors, etc.  Successful businessman, own company, life was good.....I have been fortunate enough not to have started on meds although it looks like Feb. or March might be the target date.   So, let's hope they work and keep me going to see a normal life span.

I can tell you one thing; this has opened my eyes to just how difficult it is to manage this entire disease scene.... I know now that I really had NO idea.   I have tons of respect for anybody having to deal with this in any way.

I was infected in 2005, age 56.  Diagnosed Dec. 2006.  Started Atripla May 2008.  I will be 60 next week and am pathetically healthy and fit despite my MD's valiant efforts to find _something_ wrong with me.

I was diagnosed and tested HIV+ at age 32, back in 1987 ,but may have been POZ+ a lot longer than that,  (1983/85) I started AZT and Videx back in 1991, I was also diagnosed with Full-blown-Aids at age 42, in 1998, I'm now 52, and it's 2009, and still alive and well, healthy and fit , and plan on keeping it that way, so far so good  ;D

Was 19 when I was diagnosed on 1987.

It's weird to think I've spent my entire adult life with this.

I think either 29 or 30...I remember it was right around Halloween.   Ghosts and skeletons sure make you feel cheery when you get that news.
