Title: Blips ??
Post by: whoknew on May 28, 2011, 05:39:25 am
I am HIV positive and so is my husband, we have both been undetectable for 2 plus years on Atripla .... my question is about Blips my Husbands recent VL test has come back at 603 ???!!!! he has never missed a dose infact he is the one that reminds me every day. He was fighting another viral infection at the time of the last test and was on antibiotics. The prescribing dr said there was no interaction between the strong Antibiotics and the Atripla but it seems suspicious.

I am worried that his medication might fail , the consultant isnt bothered and thinks it may be down to the new testing maching but to me 600 is far to large a blip. They are retesting in a month.

I am praying that the antibiotics havent interfered with the atriplas ability to do its job !!

Have any of you had blips like this that have resolved themselves

Generally speaking a VL spike needs to be in the low thousands to be of concern. That or if it persists across a couple of tests.

So probably your husband's consultant is correct. 603 on a single test is most likely just a blip.

These things happen.

Hang in there! :)

I agree with Matty -- I had low level viremia a couple of years back and wound up reading a lot of the literature on blips and low level viremia -- 600 was on the low end of the blip range; often a blip is in the 1000+ range.  (When they first started talking about blips, undetectable was 400).

Retesting in a month is standard practice and it typically resolves.

Be well

It's probably a blip honey... my last one was 500-something.... the re-test showed it was only a blip.

Let us know what you find out.
