poz alone & need to know something
« on: August 19, 2009, 11:39:25 pm »
Hello

I want to give my thanks to this forum. You don't know how important information this community has provided to me.

I live in China , there is no many sources to know about this disease here. When i feel hopeless and afraid , i found people who has the same situation as me here. I have got a lot of useful info and exprience. Most important , it gives me a hope.If others can face and fight HIV, i believe i can do the same good.

I still have some questions:
1.How long can a man stay health with HIV averagely?maybe 10years?
2.There is limited medicine available here , only AZT/3TC/d4T/ddI/NVP/EFV/IDV. are these enough? Are they good?
3.Is there any updated news about HIV vaccine for treatment? Maybe ,(i hope) human is able to cure this disease 5 years later. Then , we can live like nothing happened.

Looking very forward to hearing from you.

Thanks

Hi Jet,

I am from Hong Kong.

There are actually many online resources on HIV in Chinese: a useful place to set perhaps is here http://szgay.net/aizi/

And to answer your questions, (1) it's difficult to tell in general and the virus behaves differently in different people. But if you are receiving the treatments, there's a very good chance that you can continue to live a healthy life, (2) a combination of drugs can potential least a long time if you don't have a lot of resistance issues to start with and adhere to taking them, and the number of drugs that will be made available in China will continue to increase shortly in China, (3) no one can predict science but I don't think we're looking at a "cure" within 5 years.

I hope this helps and the best of luck, Shaun

That's somewhat vague of a question. Do you mean with or without treatment ?

If you start treatment when needed, you can expect to live a normal lifespan these days.

If you never take any treatment, on average the time between HIV infection to AIDS level is 5 to 10 years, and then if still untreated, you will only have about 2 years to go from there.

Of course, there are exceptions - some people will go from HIV to AIDS in 1 year, and some people will never develop AIDS at all. There are many genetic factors involved.

You need to be checked regularly to decide when to start treatment.
