Tested positive "Elite Controller" but...
« on: February 28, 2012, 10:43:28 am »
Hi all,

I just tested positive a month ago and yesterday did my second visit to my doctor and he's telling me that my tcell count is 136 but my viral load is undetectable.  He is saying that I'm a elite controller.  He's taking a new t-cell blood test and say that is the test comes low he'll start me on medications.  I just wonder what good medications can be if my viral load is undetectable with out meds.  I'm a 50 year old men and have not being exposed to hiv since 1989.  Thank you for being here for me...

Some in formation has been lost or misunderstood to this point.

1) With only one test, how can he know if you are an elite controller?

Did you give him a reasonable date for your infection?  I dont undestand your sentence mentioning 1989?  That is the date you think is your infection date. Or that is the last time you had unsafe sex.  So there was a recent exposure you are unaware of?  No HIV tests all those years???

If you were infected years ago, and have an undetectable viral load, thats a good sign (though not your TCELL - more on that soon).

If you were infected recently, you need more time to know what your immune system is going to be. Especially if it was the last few months.

2) "I just wonder what good medications can be if my viral load is undetectable with out meds."  -  your CD4 is too low to live without HAART.  Only HAART will raise these eventually to where you have "normal" immune function. Which you need not only for HIV but for EVERYTHING that challenges your body.

Welcome to the forum.
So how are you doing with all this news?

thanks for your reply, 1989 was the last time I exchange needles.  From 1983 to 2003 I was married to 1 lady, I did not have sex with anyone one other than her and She is negative. From 2004 to present I only have sex with my pressent wife and She also is negative.  Yes I have just 1 test.  I'll keep this forum updated.  Thank you for the comments and support.

Well if you have had HIV for over 20 years, you certainly had a very good long run without medicine.  Very strong immune fight against HIV.

And now that your CD4 are in the danger zone, you can start HAART and start rebuilding your immunity to fight all illnesses.

Getting diagnosed is a terrible shock to many.  Was for me.

How have you been feeling physically these last months and years?  Any reason that you had an HIV test recently?

There are silver linings - neither your ex love, nor your present wife were infected!!!  And perhaps, if you maintained low to undetectable viral loads for years and years, there wasn't much damage to your body, other than the present low CD4s.  Ask your doc about that.

Have you been reading the lessons here?
