Test question
« on: March 16, 2010, 01:41:18 pm »
I have tested negative at 13 weeks with a rapid test.  Do I need a duo test to be conclusive? I am testing at 24 weeks as well because I have read differring opinions on window period and testing.  Is that 24 week test needed? My test counselor didn't think I needed to but I am having some physical issues and I am concerned about it.  However I have been told that my risk assessment was low - oral sex male to male. Is this correct as well? What are the chances of a 13 week test turning positive and if it does, how often are there false positive tests and what should I do if it is positive?  I have read that only in a rare case is the window period 6 months?  Is that correct as well. thank you for your help and feedback.

No, a 24 (or 26 weeks) test is not needed except in cases involving longterm intravenous drug use, organ transplant or treatment for cancer. Otherwise a negative at 13 weeks is sufficient and considered to be  conclusive result. The Rapid is an approved test.

Your negative is a reliable result.

Receiving oral is not a risk and giving oral is only theoretically a risk. The only confirmed risks for the sexual transmission of HIV are unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse.

You don't need any further testing.

Thanks for the response.  So the physical issues - would you believe that they are unrelated?

Not related to HIV because you don't have HIV.

And if you had a real risk, which I hasten to say again that you didn't, if you had, the only way to know HIV status is by getting tested at the proper time.

Symptoms are never a reliable way to know about HIV status.

But you don't have an HIV problem so this is all just talking in general.

Re: Test question, 24 weeks + 6 months
« Reply #5 on: March 23, 2010, 12:23:48 pm »
I have justed tested at 24 weeks because my Dr. who is an HIV specialist said that I could be tested after 13 weeks, as he did not clear me. I am wondering if 24 weeks is good enough and = to 6 months. I tested negative.  Am I clear now? Can I go back to my dr. with confidence that my 24 week test is good?  Thank you for your guidance.  This site has helped me relax.

You were already told that you didn't have HIV. Your 3 month test was conclusive.

Thank you. I was just concerned because my dr. is an HIV specialist and he didn't clear me and he hasn't indicated that I had no risk.  He actually said that there could be a chance.  He also clearly said that I should test after 13 weeks.  That alarmed me.  Again, thank you!

Wonder,

If you doctor is telling you things like that, he certainly is not an hiv specialist. Maybe he just likes to get you into his office for unnecessary visits and testing so he can bill you.

You do not have hiv and as you have been told, you were conclusively negative at the three month mark.

Hi Ann,
Actually he is an HIV specialist that is associated the a community testing site and other support programs.  He was/is very good and that is why I was so alarmed because I thought I would get the all clear at 13 weeks.  He could go by the 6 month standard or because I was having physical issues, delaying his assessment.

If he is an HIV Specialist he has no business being one. You are conclusively HIV negative. They haven't been doing 6 month testing since 2004. That means he's 6 years behind times and doesn't keep updated.

Sorry, I got cut off.  As I said that was what was my concern.  Again it may have something to do with physical issues.
Thanks for your guidance.

Anyone who continues to post excessively, questioning a conclusive negative result or no-risk situation, will be subject to a four week Time Out (a temporary ban from the Forums). If you continue to post excessively after one Time Out, you may be given a second Time Out which will last eight weeks. There is no third Time Out - it is a permanent ban. The purpose of a Time Out is to encourage you to seek the face-to-face help we cannot provide on this forum.

24 week Rapid test
« Reply #14 on: April 30, 2010, 09:36:24 am »
I have had a ELISA test at 16 weeks and a rapid test at 24 weeks, both negative.  do I need additional testing?  My dr. has sent mix messgaes that mess with my head.  I was told I was negative...but testing at 7 months.  Is a 24 weeks rapid not good enough...do you think an ELISA is needed at 7 month?

I've merged your threads. Please follow the rule of the site and keep all of your entries in this one thread.

You are HIV negative. There is reason for testing any further. Anyone who tells you otherwise is not someone to listen to.

Give it up and get on with your life. Thankfully HIV is not your problem.

Andy,
Thanks for your response and comments. I was good and moving on...feeling confident until I know that I have to go to the Dr.  The mixed messages messed with my head and I just wondered if there was a valid reason for any testing from the dr's point of view that I was not aware of.  I go Monday and the anticipation scares me with what he'll say!!!

No, there is no valid reason for any further HIV testing on your part. I can only concur with Rod's remarks that the doctor is no HIV specialist.

You are HIV negative. Period. End of story. I am also going to caution you that we can't do anything more for you on this site. If you continue to return about a non-risk situation you will find yourself getting a 28 day Time Out from the site. HIV is not your problem and I don't care what that doctor is giving out about it.

Get on with your life. Really.
