A handful of us visited Sachsenhausen after the Berlin AIDS Conference back in the 90s. It was one of the earliest concentration camps. Union members, political leftists, gays and lesbians were among the first prisoners there. The evidence of the horrors of that had taken place there are still evident. Among the ones which struck me especially powerfully were some triangular structures built close to the ground. Lesbians were punished in them and they were so constructed that a prisoner could neither stand up nor sit down but only be in a torturously crouched position. It's painful to even think of it now as I recall it. Visiting a camp makes what happened very, very real and unforgettable.

I still have a stone I picked up from the grounds although I know that the memory of what I saw there that rainy afternoon will stay with me as long as I live.

That's an unusual Memorial, Hal.....but I kind of like it.   Somehow, it seems appropriate for what is being remembered...
