What would you do?
« on: July 07, 2007, 11:08:51 am »
I have this friend, he is HIV+. He is on Medicare/TennCare & draws disability like me.  I make extra money by working part time. He makes extra $ by going to his G.P. and getting prescriptions for valium, zanax, OC's, Viagra,  & Ambien. He doesn't really need those  meds, he doesn't even take them. He sells them to make extra $. I have tried to tell him that what he is doing is wrong & is considered TennCare fraud, but he won't listen to me. I keep telling myself that one of these days he is going to get caught, but this has gone on for at least 2 years. I don't see him stopping this side business of his anytime soon. He pays nothing for the prescriptions so everything he makes is proffit.

If he does get caught he will loose his Medicare/TennCare,  & disability. then he will be up shit creek without a paddle & won't be able to get the HIV meds he NEEDS to stay alive. Too much to loose for some extra $ in my opinion.

So what is your question Dan?  You say you said something to him, but your thread title asks if you should say something -- do you mean to someone else like the guy's doctor or, heaven forbid, to TennCare?

I would just butt out really... what's the point?  I agree he should not do this but you did already say something to him.

I agree....you spoke with your friend....maybe speak with him one more time and spell it out for him that he could lose a lot.  Other than that, staying out of it is the best thing to do.

There's really nothing you can do but state your opinion but I'm sure your friend has been aware of the risks involved even without your warnings. Sellling the meds is a choice he makes consciously and often. There's nothing more you can do. What you need to do now is take care of yourself and decide whether or not you want this unhappiness in your life and what you need to do about it in order to maintain your own sanity. Often what seems selfish is the best thing to do for all concerned.

the best you can do is giving good advice and show that you care.  Beyond that, he is not your responsibility.
I don't agree with what he is doing and I would have talked to him just as you did.  Nothing more.

Your friend has chosen to become a drug dealer. I'm not friends with drug dealers.

I would not be surprised if it was found that more people did this.  And no, if you're wondering I do not though when I used to get prescriptions for hundreds of 1mg's of klonopin at once I contemplated it.  I did, however, hand them out to friends as gifts and found that it was quite appreciated.

I have done my part, I spoke to him about it. I have told him on several occasions he needs to quit, but lure of easy $ is just too great for him.  This will come back to bite him on the ass one day & who is he going to call? Me! to pick up the pieces of his destroyed life. I am going to tell him I told you so when that happens.

People selling pills is not new to me. They know the risks but the money is a draw to them. You did what you could when you spoke with him. Leave it at that. I don't sell pills but will hand them out to my one friend who has problems with her hands and she usually gives me her IBs. I have been holding onto my muscle relaxers though because I have been having major muscle spasms.

Hey Dan,

I have spent the past couple of years sitting next to the Administrator of California ADAP in Commission on AIDS meetings.  Your friends doctor prescribed those meds, his or her case manager will recognize those pills are not being taken by client/patient the pharmacy records will show the meds have been picked up by the person they were prescribed to.  Since you have already spoken to your friend, I would let the course of action take place and plan on seeing some giant Redwoods during AMG.  Have the best day

huh?  Case managers look at pharmacy records?  That's news to me.  I wasn't aware that they had so much time on their hands.

Thanks Michael, I'll do that.

Abuse of the medical system in the U.S. is a topic that should be discussed during the election IMHO.

Hell not in my county does the case manager look at your pharmacy records. All mine are taken care of on the state level. Now my pharmacist knows what I take even though he doesn't distribute any of my HIV meds or fungus medication. He has it so that he knows that any prescription he gives me isn't contraindicated with my other meds. I gave him a prescription for Lipitor and it said, Do not substitute, AIDS patient. He went off contacted the Univ. and talked to the head cardiologist and I got a letter of apology in the mail. Hell I didn't even think it was a big deal. It wasn't like he didn't know I had AIDS. I've been getting meds there for years.

The person I am talking about in this thread just called me . He started talking about his "pharmacy business" & is trying to get me to go to my doctor to get prescriptions for medications I DON"T NEED OR WANT. I told him Hell No I don't want anypart of it. I don't want to earn "dirty money" & to never discuss with me what he does with his medications. I reiterated the risk that he is taking by doing this shady business & that when the hammer falls & he is thrown of medicare/tenncare & looses his disability check to not run to me for support because he won't find any with me.

Sometimes you have to be a hard assed mofo to get stupid people to LISTEN to what your saying. & When it gets to a point that I have to say shit like that I mean every damn word of it.

Really.  Get your friend to grind up that xanax and let you snort it.  You'll never let him sell it after that ride -- trust!

I know what Viagra is but never had an erectile dysfunction problem so I never read much about it.  Can't anyone get it and is there a "black market" for it?  The State Dept of Health, Office of AIDS gave a grant to Sonoma County for a website www.stayinformedsonoma.net.  I hear in meetings the grant funds are almost used up and the future of the site?  Have the best day

Absolutely there is a black market!  For boner pills?  You betcha!  Ya see...frequently tweakers get all horned up only to find the little guy unwilling.  Pop a Viagra and presto!  Instant party.  And since it is not OTC, not everyone can get it that readily.

Frequently people can trade Viagras for street drugs, which in turn creates a need for some Viagra.

A viscious but exhilerating cycle.

At our ASO, Face-to-Face they have 4 levels of clients.  I am Level 1 and get a phone call twice each year and my Case Manager is available by appointment.  I usually send a fax.  I also get a BD card and the beginning of the BD month.  ;D

They have their own nursing staff so Levels 3 and 4 can get more attention.  They have access to records.  In Title II EMA's, there is not much access to information but the ASO does maintain a part-time RN.  This Nurse goes once each month to every clients home and more frequently to clients with greater needs.  Have the best day

I had a friend who did the same thing. Probably still does. I understand the need for extra money when you are on disability, but his is dangerous because if it backfires, you are totally cut off from services, and you may also be up against drug charges. I finally had to end my friendship with this person.I couldn't watch it going on, nor could I stop it. I wouldn't turn him in or anything like that, but I couldn't sit and watch someone milk the system, while others can't get meds. I don't wish him any ill wil, but I cannot be friends with someone like that. Especially when I'm the one who will be called upon for help when it all goes tits up. Just remove yourself from the situation...
