There is more chance of being killed in a car accident going to the beach than being eaten by a shark at the beach.

Sharkie,
I got excited when you mentioned your trip. Like Matty, I thought you meant our Cocos Islands. but, do put them on your list - I'll even come with ya. It's been on my list for ages - however, $ to get there is prohibitive - about $1500 return from Perth.

You ever thought about Lord Howe Island, Sharkie?

I think its a even break.

Ever since I've been on meds, I've had this terrific appetite for batter fried shark with a side of some fava beans and a nice chianti.   ;D

As long as the whole animal is used, I'm ok with it.  The practice of stripping  its fins and dumping it back into the water is just terrible.

Shark is in fact tasty, but there is a huge mercury problem around these here parts so it isn't considered safe to eat.

Absolutely. It's a ghastly death for the creatures; not just abominably cruel, but an obscene waste.

yes it is terrible. I believe the amount of sharks killed a year is about 100 million. Sometimes it takes hours and even days before the shark dies at the bottom of the ocean. And for what? Some texture in some soup or some claimed male sexual enhancement?

As Little Steve will attest, Australia has a number of unique shark species including the Grey Nurse shark which is critically endangered because of the wanton greed of humans.

I feel like this about every animal that's killed (deer etc.).  Good point, baby.

Attack me sharkie! ;D

But seriously, the first time I saw a shark while diving was a single 10 ft long whale shark. It of course won't bite and feeds itself by filtering. Some of us trainee divers wanted to approach it but our instructor stopped us, fearing that it might get scared and in a panic to swim away bump into us, which would be like getting hit by a small pick up. I have never seen one again!

Ain't it?! Wiki says it's:

Orectolobiformes: They are commonly referred to as the carpet sharks, including zebra sharks, nurse sharks, wobbegongs and the whale shark.

But it certainly didn't feel like a shark encounter... :D

yes whale sharks are classified as sharks.  I encountered a 25ft and 40ft one on a trip once. It was if  a big school bus was  passing. passing us.  I'll have to dig up the picture of my friend (who is over 6 ft) floating by its tail fin. my friend looked like a doll.

20 more days until I get my shark fix!

..I encountered a 25ft and 40ft one on a trip once...

So the one we saw was a baby whale shark! Rightly so, as we were still in Hong Kong/South China Sea, probably not enough foods to attract the bigger ones...

I am planning to join my first diving trip since my diagnosis to the Philippines later this month, hope it works out.
