Title: Tuberculosis
Post by: aztecan on October 22, 2012, 10:48:34 am
Yep, it has raised its ugly head again.

The boyfriend of one of my clients apparently has quite the active, and contagious, case of tuberculosis.

So far, he infected my client and one of her daughters. They will in DOT for nine months now.

Of course, then there those "contacts" that must be reported to the Department of Health because TB is a reportable disease.

Another client was a regular visitor in the house, so he will be checked this week.

The daughter attends a nearby Catholic school. They have screened the kids in her class and with whom she rode a small bus for an outing recently.

The doctor is being screened, too.

Oh, and one other person who has spent considerable time in the residence with the infected boyfriend present - me.

I already had a PPD administered last Friday. It is clear, so I am too. :)

But it is a timely reminder that TB is still among us and something you don't want to ignore.

HUGS,

Mark

Sorry to hear this Mark . Its good to know that you are in the clear .

I had a scare with TB about 10 years ago by having a weak reaction to the skin test , after futher testing I was cleared also . I think there is a blood test now , if I ever test again I will insist on that one if they will let me .

My docs in chicago used to do the TB skin test once a year and they had to do a control test with candida . The control skin test with candida used to eat an itchy red hole in my arm so after going through that about 4 times I refused to let them do it again . Ugh , the good old days LOL .

Thanks for the reminder Mark.  We sometimes become complacent when we don't hear about outbreaks for a while.

Glad you're ok.

Coplacency about TB and other diseases gets us into trouble.  Which is why I have had my flu shot last week.  Saw in the news some kid, 17 years old , died of flu in Colorado.  Probably preventable.
ITS FLU SEASON

Thanks Mark

God Mark, that's awful.  I'm quite familiar with clients "giving" each other things, but it's usually std's.  I'm sorry about the TB, but I"m glad you're alright. :-*

Two years ago I had a nonreactive skin test but the blood test came back positive.  Those nine months of Isoniazid were awful.

Mark,

I just came across your post.  Coincidentally the cancer center I go to for a blood problem just notified me that there is a patient who has active TB in the center.  They did not identify me as one being possibly infected probably because it was not on my appt day.  Wonder if I should still get it checked out.  It is scary TB is coming back into the fold.  Same as meningitis.

Glad you are ok!

Best,

Jeff
