Welcome to Do I Have HIV?

Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Hi there.

I am a registered nurse and I just had my first needle-stick after 6 years of practice. I guess I just needed a place to go to talk to people so that I could feel better as at the time I am beside myself with worry..not just for me, but for my girlfriend too.

Here's the story..I was giving heparin to a patient through a 25-30 gauge needle(the smallest, thinnest ones you can find for those who are unfamilair..think insulin needle because that is what it was) and while pulling the needle out..the patient jerked, and I ended up sticking myself. The patient has a history of Hep C, and upon rapid testing, he came back positive for HIV. I was put on isentress(spelling) and Truvada. When I poked myself the poke didn't feel very deep..but it DID bleed..I used alcohol rub because a sink wasn't nearby when the situation happened...I guess that's all for now..I've been taking the PEP like my life depends on it (haha) Thanks for reading.

You can have every reason to believe you are going to come out of this OK , PEP is very effective , also its in your favor that you were pushing medicine and not drawing a substantial amount of blood into the syringe chamber before the needle stick .

You are using the state of the art PEP and there is an excellent chance you will come through this OK. Aside from perhaps some sleep issues due tothe Isentress, you should suffer few if any side effects.

I fully concur with Moderator Jeff that you will be fine.
