The Slippery Business Of Fake Olive Oil.....
« on: October 03, 2007, 12:15:29 pm »
Heads up foodies, apparently we are "Awash in Counterfeit Olive oil "   http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2007/08/13/070813fa_fact_mueller/            this is one hell of an article, and loaded with tasty quotes like : "even the most creative criminals have difficulty outwitting a properly trained Tasting Panel "
and my personal favorite  " : " Either Its Disgusting and You spit it in Someones Face , or its Good "  gotta love those Olive Oil Mafioso types....

I learned way more than I ever need to know about Olive oil from this piece, you could say its T.M.I. about E.V.O.O.

At least those guys are trying to pass it off as something real.  They use this crap in my hospital cafeteria that says very clearly "20% Olive Oil, 80% Vegetable Oil"  and they display the container up on a counter proudly like it's some prize they won at a Greek Festival instead of something they bought cheap from Sysco. It gives me the runs everytime they slip it into something.

This cracks me up -- 80% vegetable oil -- it's so vague.  I wonder exactly which vegetables are used to make the vegetable oil?

who is off to anoint himself

On the morning following the last full moon, I walked into the local convenience market.  The cashier commented about the spicy smell and suggested it was something in the microwave... Could it be the donuts? Not likely, it was me as I had anoited myself with Bergamot, Lotus, and Dragon's Blood oils for the previous evening festivities and kind of forgot.  Have the best day

Im more of a truffle oil man myself perhaps with some Yuzu behind the ears if Im feeling Tangy..

I wonder if it would invalidate all of those Pagan rituals if the oil turned out to be some bogus mix of soybean and peanut oil rather than the Ultra virgin nectar from Aphrodites teat...
