Hey I KNOW how you feel...ever since I started meds I feel the worst hangovers after a night of heavy drinking. Which is actually a good thing, binge drinking gets you nowhere.

I also know exactly how you feel.  I get a hangover SO incredibly easily since starting medication.  If I have much more than a glass of red wine during an evening, I know I'll be feeling like vomiting the next day.   :-\

Or switch to pot. If you bake with it or use a vaporizer you will spare your lungs, liver and kidneys all at the same time.

Really?? Mines are not that bad, especially with wine. My real problem is vodka. If I have 4 vodka drinks I know I will have massive headaches the next morning.

Surprisingly, I have excellent functions in all these areas.  I guess I'm fortunate that the first time I ever tried drugs was a joint and it freaked me out beyond belief.  Have never tried anything harder since.  My friends used to indicate all the time that it's probably a good thing, because with my "personality", I'd have become a crack whore. :o  I've never had to sell anything to buy wine. ;D  And in my younger days, I preferred to donate my ass to the good of mankind without profiting.

Next time you have a drink, make sure you're drinking plenty of water as well. You'll be surprised at how much this helps. I don't mean only having a big drink of water before you go to bed, I mean drinking a lot of water alongside your alcohol. If wine is your drink of choice, try adding some sparkling water to your wine as well. (Not lemonade - it won't work the same as water.)

My drink of choice is whiskey, ice and water, with a pint of ice water alongside. I rarely get hangovers from this, even now that I'm on meds. The only time I get a hangover is if don't have a full stomach (er, food!) first. I also find that drinking water alongside my alcohol keeps me from getting too pissed too soon. It comes in handy on pool night - I can still shoot straight by the time the doubles comp comes around. ;D

Remember - all things in moderation, including moderation! ;)

I love dark rum with coke, but it gives me terrific hangovers and it also makes me say what I think without filtering it first, which often makes me sound like a right bitch.

I once told a young lady in my local that she's very pretty - kinda fat, but with a lovely smile and beautiful eyes. She had just been dumped and needed a ego-boost and well, I told the truth a little too much. (And it IS true - she's gorgeous. She's lost weight since the incident and she's a knockout.)

She promptly burst into tears and I was a pariah for a few weeks. Ooops!  I did mean well, but my filter had been disabled by rum and didn't catch the word "fat" before it fell out of my mouth. I felt like a total jerk afterwards. Lesson learned.

Vodka and coke has the same effect only worse - it makes me argue just for the sake of arguing. I think I'm playing devil's advocate but when I sober up I realise I'm really just being a bitch.

Maybe it's the coke? ;D

I also love Guinness but it puts the weight on me like nobody's business. I might as well be having a fat (there's that word again!) wedge of chocolate cake every time I have a pint. I have a pint now and then as a treat. At least it's a safe drink for me socially - it makes me mellow, not bitchy. Whiskey is the same.

Britchick, you'll have to let us know how you get on the next time you have a few. Remember to eat first and drink plenty of water and you should be ok. :)

Britchick - it really might have been your system on that day, or that wine, or something in the air.  If you love to occassionally be a lush, I wouldn't make a rule on MEDS + ALCOHOL until you have done a full investigation.....   ;D

I'm very anxious to test it out....My doc didn't want me to drink for the first 4 weeks while on meds so when I do my bloodwork he can get an accurate gauge on how the combo is affecting my liver.   I'm not a lush by any means, but I love my wine, beer, vodka, gin, tequila, rum (OK, maybe I am sounding a lush...woops!).....

Anyways...I'm looking forward to August 15th when I give blood, and enjoy a nice stiff drink.     8)

Hi!

Good idea waiting until after bloodwork for that drink.I have no idea if its true or not but I heard alcohol can stay in your system for up to 3 days....so I've not had drinks  for  a few days before getting bloods taken........so far...... so good!!!!!!!!

Wonder if anyone here  knows how long  , how many days or hrs alcohol can be detected in bloods?

I don't know for how long, but I DO know that they don't look for alcohol in your blood. They leave blood-alcohol tests to the police after you've been picked up drink-driving.

I've had alcohol the night before a blood draw and it's never once been flagged. I suppose if you've got liver issues going on or if you drink heavily as a matter of daily habit, then your liver enzymes might be elevated which would cause them to question you about your drinking habits, but otherwise they're not going to have the foggiest. Unless of course you turn up at the clinic with alcohol breath.

I think asking anyone to drastically alter their drink intake (or any other "life-style" habit) to gauge anything is just silly. I want to know how the meds are impacting my body as I go about my usual activities - not how they impact on my body while I'm not being myself. To do otherwise gives a false picture. But that's just my opinion.

In fact, I had a couple drinks the day I started meds, about three or four hours after I took my first dose. Didn't have the slightest effect - at least no effects outside the usual. I've gone out a few times since that first day as well (just coming up to the end of my first full, four, uneventful weeks on Prezista, Norvir, Truvada) and it's not been a problem. I go for my first labs next week and I'm sure I'll have a drink or two before then. I'm not worried.

By the way, I'm not talking about going out and getting shit-faced. I'm talking about having a few drinks while socialising in my local, having a chat and playing a few games of pool. I don't drink in the house either.

Britchickx

It takes approximately 1 hour per ounce of alcohol.  So, if you have have six glasses of wine, it'd only take 6 hours to be completely sober.  a 12oz can of beer, a shot of liquor and a glass of wine all contain the same amount of alcohol.  If you drink over several hours, it'd take less time as you're metabolizing 1 oz per hour as you drink.  Alcohol is not a fat soluble substance and can not be detected days later.

So Britchick - how's your head this morning? Or is it afternoon by the time you're outta your pit and reading this? ;D

It's shaping up to be a summer to remember for the Jamaicans. Not only did Usain win the gold in the 200m, but his teammates got the silver and bronze too! Wow!

And let's not forget Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce. She was the first Caribbean woman to win gold in the 100m in 2008 and she won gold in the 100m this year as well (becoming the third woman—and first non-American—to win two consecutive 100m events at the Olympics), and won silver in the 200m.

They've got nine medals so far, three in each colour. Not bad for such a small country.

And add to that - it's Jamaica's 50th celebration of independent nationhood this summer. Go Jamaica! I'm 50 this year too - 1962 was a fantastic year. ;)

Now if we could just do something about the intense homophobia and rampant discrimination against poz people in Jamaica...  :-\  Years ago I was engaged to a guy whose mother was from Jamaica - in fact if we'd married (and stayed together), we would have had our 32nd wedding anniversary just the other day on the eight of August. Yep, our wedding date was going to be 8-8-80. How cliche is that? Anyway, because of him I've always had a special place in my heart for Jamaica too and it saddens me to see how hiv positive people and gay men are treated there.

How long and when did you live there? It's a gorgeous island - we were going to honeymoon there and visit his relatives (several aunts and uncles and various cousins). I'm kinda jealous that you got to live there. :P

Hi Ann!

I lived out there for 1 and a half yrs but also  then kept holidaying over 8 yrs due to relationship then!

I absolutely loved it........everything good and bad.I totally agree re homophobia discrimination being OTT!

I remember talking to friends....and having people tell me "you cyaant" talk to that person......calling them "batty bwoy,"etc.

I talk to who I want when I want!By the way mi okay!I love rum...but couldn't go too mad as busy later today!

I have many JA friends here and over there.yep the JA girls events were fab at the  Olympics...just as in Bejiing.

I would have loved to have been on the island this week!

I REALLY WISH THE HOMOPHOBIA AND HIV/AIDS DISCRIMINATION WOULD STOP!!!!!!!!
