Anti-Rape Protests causing storm in India
« on: December 23, 2012, 02:51:56 am »
It all started a week ago, when the news broke out of a 23 year old girl- a medical student- being gang-raped in a moving bus in Delhi. The grisly details are so horrifying that they prompted debates in national Parliament and have provoked protests across all major Indian cities- particularly in Delhi- which are still ongoing. And in which I participated.

Being a Delhiite this rape case has jolted my entrails.

A girl in the company of a male friend was returning from a trip to the cinema when the couple were duped into boarding a bus on the pretext that it was a regular passenger bus plying the street. Then amid the interiors of tinted windows and drawn curtains (both illegal in Delhi) they cruised around South Delhi- an area rutted with police check-posts- and carried out gang-rape in the most psychotic manner. For those with weak nerves, please look away now.

When the boy fought back and tried to defend the girl his head was bashed with an iron rod. The perpetrators used the same rod and shoved it up the girl so violently that it brought out half her intestines. Her private parts are irreparably damaged. The rape survivor is still in hospital and half her intenstines needed to be severed in surgery.

Sadly, these sorts of events have become so routine that my initial reaction was ‘oh another gang rape in Delhi.’ I salute the women activists and the media for stirring up this issue and raising a ruckus. It is about fucking time. I distinctly recall a couple of years ago, the Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit, also a woman, made a statement to the effect of: ‘If women are going to work late and go out late at night dressed in revealing clothes then they are asking for trouble’.

Ask any girl in North India whether she has been harassed- either groped on public transport or withstood lewd comments and slurs- at some point or another and I wager you would not find a single response in the negative.

The shocking thing about this incident is how meticulously it was planned and executed. The perpetrators are working class people- or everyday folk. A gym instructor, a bus driver -who incidentally also drove a girls school bus and used one of these school buses for this repugnant crime -, a fruit seller among others.

What started out as small demonstrations, has over a week, snowballed into a major movement across urban India decrying the misogynistic mindset and mistreatment of women- an extremely common feature on Indian society- especially North India.

Good lord how calculated and vicious a crime.

And, from one of your linked articles..."Official data show that rape cases have jumped almost 875% over the past 40 years -- from 2,487 in 1971 to 24,206 in 2011."

875% !

Just to add a word of support for those poor women in India who have been and continue to be terribly abused, raped and sometimes murdered.  And a shout out to that young man and the other men who try to protect the ladies and often get beaten and badly hurt themselves.  Let the powers that be in India know that good folks worldwide are watching and we are very angry that this continues to be the norm.

Quite something, isn't it? But it should be borne in mind that India's population has also increased exponentially since then.

India presently holds 1.2 billion people. That is more than the entire continent of Africa. Or more than Europe and North America combined. Loads of shit happens in remote parts of India and it never comes to light.

After fighting valiantly 'against the odds' the rape victim succumbed to her injuries early this morning.  :'( She was flown to a Singapore hospital 3 days ago in order to remove her from the media glare.

Central Delhi has turned into a fortress so as to minimize protests. Massive protests last week turned violent and one policeman was also killed.

I was teargassed.

I heard this on this evening's news. Tragic, sickening -- hopefully it will be catalytic.

Are they pushing for a ban on iron rods?

I apologize for this.  I was going to just delete it and move on but realize that's the coward's way.  I was bringing another debate into this that didn't belong.

I've just been overwhelmed with all this misery and the ridiculous debates.

True Apologies
