Damn earache
« on: January 30, 2012, 03:59:34 pm »
I did well fending off this "bug" that everyone around me has until the last few days.  Today I'm having a horrible earache.  I guess I'm lucky since this is only my 2nd one in my life.  But it still hurts.  Am I at great risk for developing AIDS because of this?   :o

I guess I'll have to go buy me a nettiepot as I don't have anyone to piss in my ear.

I almost died from it just over 2 years ago.  I lived several months with a misdiagnosis until I switched doctors.  Thankfully he figured it out quickly and I was immediately hospitalized.  I was blind by then and wracked with lessions head to toe.  Add that to a 100lb frame, and I'll be I was a hot mess. :P  A month in  the hospital and constant spinal tabs are a fabulous memory.

I'll just have a wine glass full of my codiene cough syrup and hit the bed.  Sure wish I had me a medical marijuana cigarette.

Wolfie,

Sorry to hear about your current pesky annoyance with the earache. I had an earache in 2007 with symptoms of equilibrium imbalance.  A week in the hospital and a few antibiotics cleared everything up.  Never had the problem before or since.

I suspect with your recent episode, you, like me, will live to type the tale and be fine when it is all over.

Take care.

20 years ago this would have been a crisis and would have been wondering if it was my time...lol ;D  I've already swigged a bunch of codeine so I should be crashing soon.

I made the mistake of telling my mother that I have a painful earache and she started her worrying and fretting crap.  Like I'm really going to call my doctor and tell him my ear hurts. :o  I put some peroxide in it so hopefully by the time I sober up from my cough syrup, it'll be gone.

Now, surely you know that "fretting and worrying" are among the key skill sets required of mothers.  ;)

And I won't even go to rubbing the shoulder, brushing the back of her hand over your forehead to check your temperature and asking her grown child to stick out his tongue to see its color (etc.)  :D

Glad you did the peroxide deal. That is one of the helpful remedies.

BTW, drinking cough syrup on the rocks can produce quite an alternative plane experience.  :D

Get well soon.

The pain itself is gone (probably thanks to the codeine) but now both ears are completely plugged...grrr...    At least I slept well last night.  Probably time to soak in super hot water.

Perhaps I'll make a day of it;  draw a hot bath, put a box of chilled wine on a little cart along with the smokes and an ash tray.  Grab a few porn rags adult reading books and pretend I'm a young teenager again.

GRR....thought it was going away, now it's back in both ears again.  Can barely hear, which isn't necesarily a bad thing.  Just popped a couple of Oxycodone followed by another swig of codeine cough syrup.  Hopefully, it'll allow a great night of sleep.

Kinda weird that I don't have any other symptoms to really complain about.  The aching is totally gone, I just have that plugged up bell tone sound in my damned head.

If it gets worse, I'll at least call the doctor.  But it has to be better by tomorrow night.  I have to work. :o  Thanks for the concern and hopefully the pills do their work.  Thank goodness I have a bunch leftover from my ass surgery.

I hope you feel better soon.  I'm trying to get into the doc tomorrow for something similar.  I don't think mine is a true ear ache.  In early January, it felt like a lymph node on the right side of my neck was swollen, but not hurting.  Now, the right side of my neck leading up to my ear is stiff, tight, and causing my neck and ear to ache--causing headaches.  A friend said I've probably just been poking at the node and have it all irritated.

Thanks in advance for letting me hijack your thread to discuss something about me.  ;)  I've let this go a month without getting all hypochondriac about it.  I couldn't hold out any longer.

After sleeping almost 18 hours, all I've accomplished is to now have a chest cold in addition to the damned head issues.  I wasn't able to work as I would only be able to take their order if they signed.  Even that wouldn't have helped since I don't sign.  5 days of self help, and it's not getting better.  I'm giving it til Monday, then I'll make a doctor's appointment.  That's the surest way to get over it; make an appointment and it'll be cured 1 hour before my scheduled time. :o

I hate possibly not being able to work all weekend.  But I also don't know if whatever it is, is contagious.

Jan also mentioned using vegetable oil but indicated it would need sunctioned out.  I'm gonna try my old tried and true method.  I'm heading to the liquor store natural remedies store.  It is actually much better this afternoon after a long soak in the tub.  I'm thinking white zin will kill off what's left of those little buggers.

In addition to being a pill-popping queen, a simple heating pad could bring you some relief.

Hope you feel better.

When Jan mentioned syringing, she wasn't talking about having the oil sucked back out, she was talking about removing excess ear wax that can build up over the years. Syringing is a common practice in the UK, but I can't recall ever hearing of it being done in the states. (don't mean it doesn't happen though) Putting warmed oil in your ear a few days before having the procedure done simply helps soften the wax so it's easier to syringe out.

It's not uncommon for excess wax to build up and become more noticeable after having any sort of ear infection or head cold and sometimes it just happens without warning. When it happens, it's normally painless, but you can't hear, just like you've been describing.

I went to an acupuncturist once who put some tube of beeswax in my ear and lit it on fire.  It was supposed to suck out all the wax, or evil spirits, or something.

I cant recall any specific benefit though.

It'll be a week tomorrow so I guess it's finally time to call the doctor.  Again, I'm sure that'll make it stop an hour before the appointment.  I did notice this morning that my jaw aches terribly along with an extreme soreness right under my ear lobe.  Surprisingly, I absolutely hate going to the doctor but I guess it's time.

I'm attempting to work today as I can mostly hear out of one ear.  I'll just turn my bad ear to those who piss me off.  At least I have an excuse when they bitch that I don't serve them fast enough.  (usually on purpose).

Thanks for all the suggestions and concerns.
