Welcome to Do I Have HIV?

Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

I posted in the old forum and had been around for more than 3 months now. I had a low risk exposure and got myseld tested till 14 weeks with 3 oraquick oral swab tests, all negative. My foolishness, Not believeing those I went to local parish health unit on STD check ups day for blood test. Man another biggest mistake of my life. While drawing the blood I was trying to pay attention to the lady as to where she was getting the needle from, you know whether fresh or used one..In the meantime I got distracted due to a mishap by another lady in the lab. She claims she accidently threw the blood of previous patient. Those 2 ladies were talking to each other and I turned away from this lady to watch the other one. By the time I turned back this lady was ready with the needle. I don't know where she grabbed it from! I wanted to and felt like asking her to get a new needle in front me but I was afraid of offending her and let her do the process without asking to change the needle. Boy, biggest mistake, now the fears have doubled, even worse last night I was sweating heavily. This happened past friday. I woke up at 4.00 AM and believe me I was crying like a baby. My wife scolded me as to why I went there without telling her. I went back this morning to the clinic with this fear. They tried to assure me but it is not working. I am gripped with this fear. I don't know what to do, I called my doc he won't call me back, his assistant says he is busy. I shouldn't have gone to the health clinic. If that was really an used needle, I am really in harm's way now. I can't even take PEP now, right?

That's a mental breakdown that you describe - and the second person today to think that they got HIV from the clinic. No, don't take PEP, go seek medical help for your anxiety NOW. That's why you are sweating at night..

NB. Any advice about HIV is given in addition to your own medical advice and not intended to replace it. You should never make clinical decisions based on what anyone says on the internet but rather check with your ID doctor first. Discussions from the internet are just that - Discussions. They may give you food for thought, but they should not direct you to do anything but fuel discussion.

OK, fortunately feelings aren't facts. And no matter what scary scenarios your mind has been coming up with, you have absolutely no basis in HIV science for thinking you have an HIV problem on your hands. None whatsoever and please don't waste any of your time and energy in trying to convince me otherwise. And yes, I got the whole picture about your distracted clinic ladies. Used needles even in that setting don't get left around to be reused and infect nervous guys. No kidding.

There's no need for testing nor for further concern. And of course the thought of PEP is totally off the wall as well. Really.

If you can't let go of this concern then I suggest you get some professional help. This is not an HIV situation. It's not about facts. It's about feelings.

Somewhere deep down I do feel that I am being irrational but I don't know what's wrong with me. As a step towards better health, I have scheduled for an appointment tomorrow with my Dr. I will ask him for a referral to a psychiatrist. Hope it will help me. If you guys don't mind talking to me here, it will be very helpful. I am not trying to be a pain.

That's good that you're taking some positive steps to address your concerns.

No matter what your mind continues churning out to scare you with, those are thoughts and feelings. They aren't facts and you don't have an HIV problem. HIV jitters, well that's a different issue and you should get some help to deal with the emotional aspects of your concerns.

The sooner the better.... Life is too short to spend torturing yourself with this kind of thing.
