I made hotel reservations by phone with Michael, a very nice man who described a room with a queen size bed, a full size sofabed and a dining area, thanks once again Dennis for a great deal right near a train station, great location and nice amenities once again!  I'll room again with Mark (aztecan) which is great fun, I don't know how he does it.

Booked travel online with Amtrak on the Northeast Regional which is about one third the price of Acela...98.00 round trip plus 8.00 travel insurance, total 106.00.

Thur, 7/26-Depart NY Penn station 10:35 am, arrive Union station in DC at 2:00 pm.

Tues, 7/31-Depart DC 5:05 pm, arrive NYC at 8:39 pm.

See you in five months and if anyone comes to visit New York let me know as always.

Jody :) :) :) :) :)

I will be arriving at Union Station at 12:40 p.m. July 26 on the Amtrak Capitol Limited. I only change trains once - in Chicago.   8)

I will leave Albuquerque on July 24 on board the Southwest Chief.

I leave July 31 at 4:05 p.m., again on the Capitol Limited, from Union Station.

I will arrive back in Albuquerque at 3:55 p.m. Aug. 2.

I am really looking forward to seeing everyone, and sharing digs with Jody, who is a great roomie.

I coughed up the frequent flyer miles for a flight.   Both Reagan National and Dulles airports were the same cost, so I chose National.  Here is when I will be arriving and departing:

Buckmark/Henry Arrive Thu 7/26 12:10PM American 836 Depart Tue 7/31 1:55 PM American 819

For some reason I can't find the edit button!

JetBlue has changed the numbers of my arriving and departing flights. Everything else remains the same. I will now be arriving on #0687 and departing on #0686.

If anyone knows what happened to the edit feature, please tell me!

I asked this question once before on another thread and it was explained that one can only modify a thread for a certain amount of time.  Not sure how long though.

Deal!  Since we've yet to meet each other here in Texas, it's only fitting that we should meet for the first time in another state (or district).

I'm just glad to see that no one is flying into Dulles. Complete waste of time, and the money you might save, you would pay for in taxi service to Arlington. That being said, I live in Arlington, within earshot of National's runway...so, if anyone does end up flying into Dulles and needs a ride, let me know. I would be happy to drive out to pick you up. Otherwise, plan to spend $30 each way to get to the city. In fact, if you're flying into national and need a ride, I would be happy to oblige. The Metro is very convenient though. If you decide to Metro to Rosslyn, make sure that you get on the blue line, bound for Largo.

Crap. I just realized the dates. I'm going to be out of town that weekend. Sorry, I can't offer any rides, but I would certainly be willing to help you all with planning, if you need me. I've lived in the DC metro area for eight years now, so I'm pretty versed with anything you might want to know. Just let me know how I can help.

Well crap!  I'm pretty much transit impaired, to say the least.   ::)

So I was thinking of taking you up on your offer.  But that's o.k.  I'm sure I'll make it to the hotel, though I will probably opt for a taxi.  LOL

Aww, sorry RAB! I can help you figure out how to get to Rosslyn though. Are you flying into National or Dulles?

You're going to miss a really good time, with some wonderful people attending AMG.

I'm coming in on Wed and arriving at National.  (I think   :))

No sweat then. If you are flying into National (DCA) then you can take the metro (no need to change trains) all the way to Rosslyn, and the station is right next to the hotel. You'll just want to make sure to take the blue line train towards Largo, and ride it to the Rosslyn station. You just have to be sure that you get on the blue line train, and not the yellow line train, because they use the same platform. Once you board the train, Rosslyn will be the fifth stop. See how easy that was?  ;D

Sacrilege!  There's also vermouth and bitters in a Manhattan, as well as a cherry.  Yes, in Seattle, Von's did a very nice job with their Manhattans.  I could use one right now, and it's on 10:30 AM.   :o

You all will recall I never even made it out of the hotel that infamous Saturday night after way too many Manhattans.  A truly wonderful cocktail!  They were exquisite on the cruise last week.

Wish I would have stayed behind too after my first, second and third manhattan.  Probably how I ended up at some redneck bar in ghettoville.    :o  I still think mine were straight whiskey.

Who, Moi?  ;)

Yes, I do remember running/stumbling/staggering down that hill. I had fun that night.

But I wasn't drinking manhattans. Mine was scotch on the rocks, or with a splash of water. I have trouble remembering. It was probably the laverdar martini that started the afternoon.  :o

Did I mention that I haven't booked a flight yet as I've waited to see if anyone was driving through my neck of the country? ;D

If you can drive or have someone drive you to either Cincinnati (Cardinal line) or Cleveland (Capitol Limited) you can take Amtrak, though I'll assume you looked into that.

I did check and Amtrak is more expensive than flying.  Plus, being in SE Ohio, I'd have to back track a few hours to get to either of those 2 cities and might as well drive to DC.

The price of a flight isn't an issue, it's just all the checked luggage and hassle of lugging it around.

Were you checking on coach or a sleeper? Coach is usually pretty reasonable. Sleepers can put you in the poor house.

Were you checking on coach or a sleeper? Coach is usually pretty reasonable. Sleepers can put you in the poor house.

HUGS,

Mark

I was adding the cost of having transportation to and from a train terminal.  Our awesome governor returned the federal funds that would have connected our parts to the transamerican system.

I'm no longer afraid of flying, but the cost of extra checked luggage is crazy.  I only checked one for Seattle and that wasn't enough even with the mild weather.  I know I'll need a lot more for DC.  Hold the comments, I change often due to overheating, and not as a fashion statement.

Although, I did HAVE to buy new shoes in Seattle.  Getting ready to book a flight now, I'll just make do.  I didn't check if the hotel has laundry service, but they probably do.

Wolfter, they do have a laundry service.  bring your pup to, although the pet charge is quite outrageous.

That was to feed my shopping addiction....I needed my weekly fix. :o  Besides, I didn't have proper shoes for the flight home.

Mikie and I shopped at some discount type store there also....Absolutely wish we had that type of store around here.  Don't remember the name of it, but their prices were great and they actually had some nice things.

Hey my peeps!

Unfortunately it is starting to look like I won't be able to come to DC this year and see all my favorite people. I've been sick for quite awhile now and my GI doc thinks I have food allergies. The cost to get tested for these is going to pretty much eat up all the money that would otherwise have gone to pay for the hotel. Which sucks, because I already booked my flight! Unless some sort of miracle happens and I get a bunch of money somehow, I'm afraid AMG 2012 will have to go on without me!

Hey folks -
I plan on coming.  I have a friend visiting from Australia the first week of August but the exact dates are not set.  So rather than post an arrival/ departure I'm going to hold off.  I expect if all goes as planned I'll be doing the same as the David's - same dates and driving (my new 2012 Jetta TDI!!!) only from the opposite direction.  :)

Its official folks, I'm not going to be able to make it. I have nowhere near enough money to pay for the hotel room or anything else, and with the onslaught of so many new food allergies venturing far from home doesn't seem wise. I hope everyone has a wonderful time!

With regret, Santi and I will not be joining you all for AMG this year. We've been wavering due to my slow recovery from foot surgery 6 months ago--I'm still in pain and limping--but today we got the final word: a huge new software go-live at my hospital has been postponed to that week, and Santi's sups denied his request for time off.

I know you'll have a great time and we hope to join you next year. This will be my first year without you since Montreal in 2006.

I love you all very much. I hope you have the best time and miss y'all mucho!

@Jeff -- Yippee!

@Creighton -- I'm sorry you and Santi won't be attending.  Take care of that foot.  I hope that go-live doesn't turn into a cluster fuck.

Also saddened about Creighton and Santi... I will keep my fingers crossed that things will change.  I can't get there until Saturday morning myself (I have tried numerous times to get out of/reschedule a Friday evening work commitment to no avail) so I know the frustration of work interfering with AMG.  How dare they!

So sorry to hear that we will be without Creighton and Santi....   :(  Of course, you WILL be there in spirit!

I need to adjust my arrival -- I am going to head up a day earlier ( the 26th vs. the 27th).  Not sure on time, it will depend entirely on when I get out of the office (hopefully early) and what the traffic up from Richmond is like -- most likely early evening.
Unsure when (or if) Sid will join us -- perhaps for the weekend, depending on his work schedule -- with our wedding in Sept (and our other trips this year), he doesn't have much vacation time left.
Can't wait!

GAME CHANGE!!!

1) Jan's coming

2) Santi got 2 days off

3) I just stuck my vacation request under my boss's hand while she was on a call and jiggled the paper until she had signed it. Then I got online and didn't stop clicking until it was all done.

We'll be arriving at 4:40pm on 7/26, SW Airlines at Reagan International!!

Santi will be leaving Sunday afternoon at 5:15, and I'll be leaving Tuesday at the same time.

See you all, after all!!

Sid's attendance is up in the air -- but would only be the weekend at most.

There is going to be some changes to my times...I've decided to stay over after the 31st and go to Fredericksburg and visit my Ex's sister, so I will be taking the "Bocker3 Express" (the backseat of Mikes car) down to Fred and not flying out.

My arrival time will remain the same.

@ Willy- Yes I will be there.  I don't know if I will get there thursday night, friday morning or night, it depends on if I have to work, I will know that Wed. when the schedule goes up. (My work week is Friday-Thursday.)

If I don't work Friday then I am going thursday after work and look for a hotel room somewhere, since I am doing the white house tour.  I will let you know wednesday when I get my schedule when I will be there for sure.

When is the meet&greet? I know it says somewhere but I'm to lazy to look for it. ;D

Yes you are right in that I am driving in.

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

I just got an Orbits email confirming all of my fight info and all of our seating info form ABQ to DCA and from DCA back to ABQ,

some of the fights didn't have all of seating listed, ( when I booked this back in FEB 2012) but they all do now , so I feel much better  :)

see you all there

Well I'm all packed.  Except for some small bits and pieces (toiletries) that I'll put in zip lock bags tomorrow morning.

I'm a little frustrated though.  I have too much stuff to fit in the small roll along (which I could take as carry on), and not enough for the larger suitcase (which I'll have to check for $25.00).  I tell ya size really does matter.   ;)

I have to be at the friggin airport at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning for my 6:00 a.m. flight.  Damn fool is pitching a fit about it so I'll probably either take my car and park it in the economy lot, or take a taxi.

So by this time tomorrow I should be landing in DC.

Can't wait to see everyone again and meet the first timers.

I really look forward to these gathering.

My flight is Thursday @ 8:05, so that means getting to the airport at around 6:30, leaving the house at 5:45 (so I can park in the economy lot and shuttle to the airport) and waking up at 4:45... this after waking up at 4:45 this morning, getting home at 6:15 this evening, and setting the alarm for 5:00 tomorrow morning... and I have to go get a haircut tomorrow after work (at my back of the tattoo shop barber) and pick up a couple of things at the store....

Its going to be a long few days - but well worth it.

I will arrive at DCA at 1:00 pm and should be to the hotel around 2 on Thursday..... ready to drink by 2:20   ;D

I will definitely find you...

If you arrive and don't see me in the lobby or at the bar (if there is one in the hotel) - ask the concierge where the nearest restroom is and check the third stall...  I should be on my knees in there... especially, if I see a good looking bellhop.  ::)

WHAT?? NO BAR IN HOTEL??? Did I vote for that? Oh hell. I've only just learned that all liquor in VA is sold in ABC stores, so we'll have to cross over to DC for hooch...I don't think there are liquor stores in the Austin airport...SHIT!

There is an ABC Store at 1731 Wilson Blvd or about 4 blocks from the hotel walking west. Wine and beer can be bought at the supermarket.

Thank you Miss P! On my phone the closest one looked to to be more like 4 miles away. I figured Dixie Liquors across the river looked closer. Good to know! I did call the Safeway that's nearby to see what they sold, and to ask where the closest AA meetings are.

I believe Dixie Liquors is right across the bridge - in Georgetown... it is right next to the gas station where you can see the steps that were used in the filming of the original Exorcist....

Dixie Liquors is quite legendary...but it would not be easy to get there because the Metro does not stop in G'town.  Like the others said, the ABC store is nearby...we will make it work!

The other thing to know about the ABC Store in Rosslyn is that Ray's Hell Burger is in the same building. They'll even put seared foie gras and truffle oil on your selection. President Obama even took Dmitry Medvedev there!

As far as Georgetown goes, it's not hard to just walk across the bridge to get there. It's not a short walk but it is doable. If you want to take the subway there you can get off at the Foggy Bottom station and five blocks to the eastern edge of Georgetown too -- I used to do it all of the time when I was a teenager (to buy porn!)

heh. You guys crack me up. I do this once every three months (more often recently) to catch my flight to Liverpool for my hiv clinic - but I usually have to get up by at least 4:15am to make sure my hiv related diarrhea is under control for the day so I don't have any nasty accidents in the taxi or plane. Taxi to the airport picks me up between 5:30 and 5:45am, depending on whether or not there are any other pick-ups besides me.

I lucked out this year , my flight is a comfortable 10 am direct flight to DC .

Last year for AMG I had to be up at 4:30 to get to the airport in time . The worse part was I had an out of town guest that stayed over because he needed to be at the airport at the same time for his trip to Mexico . We had dinner out and a bottle of Bourbon afterwards and I managed to get about 3 hours sleep . I arrived in Seattle very hungover and bloated and I think even my teeth hurt I was in such bad shape . I will not repeat this again .

I just started my washing.

I'm only at the stage where I'm looking in closet to see which shirts have fried chicken grease stains so I can make my final selection . I did manage to get my suitcase out of my closet and into the spare bedroom without my dog seeing me and getting upset ... I thought she would never go out for her morning poo but the magic happend just moments ago .

I have been going to the bank each day... as I have one of those max limits on withdrawals from ATM.....

Even though, there are plenty of BoFA up in DC that I can hit up...   ;D

We prefer CASH, why leave a paper-trail, that just leaves you wide-open for ID-thief...

so we save for Vacation all yr long, and we just use that for fun....

I called  TSA, and told me as long as it's not over 10K we don't care  :D

Even my parents in their late 70's don't do that. And they travel a lot. Some of you act like you're going to Suriname or something.

Uhhh. Carrying large amounts of cash leaves you wide open to Thugs. You do realize that people still get mugged in Large cities right? Especially if you look touristy. I wont even go into the hideous mess at Airport Security.

Come on people, its not 1929, No need to make a run on the banks. Its a 4 day trip.

A) I live in North Miami, I work in downtown Miami, I hang out in "pork and beans" part of Miami - "thugs" are nothing new to me;
B) I typically carry a small amount of walking around money;
C) The one time I didn't have over $20 on me, was the time I got jacked at gunpoint - the person stole both my cell phones and $17, and almost shot me - because...... wait for it..... I only had $17 on me..... down here, if someone goes to the trouble of jacking you and you have no money on you.... you're just about as good as dead.
D) Not boasting.... but 3 years in the military and 2 years of taekwondo, plus a few years in a mutually physically abusive relationship - make me more than a little comfortable slamming the sh** out of someone who tries to jack me (lest they have a gun - which I have learned, even the best street or trainined fighting skills aren't a good match against)...
E) I actually will not be carrying all that much on me when it is said in done - as I tend to just carry what I consider pocket money - and use my card for everything else - allows me to keep a better account of what I spend.
F) comes before G
G) comes before H
H) comes before I....

I'll be sporting my mohawk, so cowgirl attire would clash.  Wumpy will have to be our resident cowgirl this year.

Before anyone asks: no, I will not be bringing any skinny jeans (nor do I own any).

I didn't realize there was a fashion component to this year's AMG meeting.  But around teh gays, there's always a fashion component, isn't there?  And it's fun to play dress up.   8)

We better be careful, or the powers that be might implement AMG uniforms for future trips.  You know, to garner equality amongst us.

Airplanes are all cashless for drinks, so be sure to bring that credit card or be prepared to drink Shirley Temples!

By the time I arrive on Saturday you will have all figured out the drinking strategy since we have learned there is no on-premises bar (are we sure about that?  sounds positively unAmerican!)

Keep posting when you guys get there.  I will at least feel "in the loop" until I join you!

Safe travels!

Not all of them. Airtran is not. Last time I flew United they would only accept Cash (might have been something wrong with the swipe). Just in case take a couple bucks. ;)

Well, ... Ed and I are packed and ready to go.  ( I didn't pull too much of a Sheldon, from Big Bang Theory),  ;D      but I always seem to over pack ! LOL !

It's about 9:00 PM here, we"ll be going to bed shortly.  We plan on leaving Palm Harbor, around 10:30 Thursday morning.  We should be in Sanford, Fl , a little after noon.  The train leaves there at 4:00, and we should arrive at the hotel around noon on Friday.

By the way, it looks as though Ed and I will celebrating our 32nd anniversary having dinner on the train ! It was 32  years ago, July 26th 1980 , that Ed  and I met !!

All packed and ready, but FIRST..........

I have to go to work in the morning  >:(

plan is to leave the office by 2:00, run home, throw my 1 suitcase (don't faint Wolfie) in the car and jump on 95N.  If all goes well, will be up there around 4:30ish.....  If all does not go well, I'll get there when I get there.

Can't wait to see you all.

I'm delayed. The aircraft cabin depressurized shortly after taking off from DFW. It will make for an entertaining story. I should get to the hotel at about 5:00pm.np

We made to the train station @12:30, the car is now on the train. It's now 1:30, so we have a couple hours to sit around before we board.

Next stop Lorton, VA.
