Bruce LaBruce - Hustler White. It's pretentious and explicit with lots of bad acting and bad camera work, lighting etc. and just weird,  but I like the underground and b-movie quality of it.

Edit to add favorite gay movie:

Rupert Graves in the role as Scudder ..mmm ... me like

Bruce la Bruce - acquired taste.  But he was in early on gay skins.

Raspberry Reich was a good concept.

Elephant -- Gus Van Sant.

If, after watching that, you need to cleanse yourself try In the Gloaming.

Absolutely.  I have tried to find In the Gloaming on DVD for years.  I don't know if it was only available on VHS.

I don't agree with whoever it was that said that all gay-themed movies are bad.   Certainly about 80% (that I won't even mention) are really cheesy and fulla cliches, but there have been some gems.

My list of "favourite" films/TV Shows with a gay theme includes some good ones and some duds that I am not ashamed to love:

The best of the best:
- Paris Is Burning
- Velvet Goldmine
- Bent
- Wild Reeds
- Mullholland Drive
- The Celluloid Closet
- And The Band Played On
- The Boys In The Band
- Gods And Monsters
- All About My Mother
- Before Night Falls
- Mysterious Skin
- Boys Don't Cry
- Wigstock
- Edge of Seventeen
- Longtime Companion
- A Single Man
- Contracorriente (Undertow)
- Angels in America
- Tongues Untied
- Tipping The Velvet

Pretty Good:
- Cachorro (Bear Cub)
- Bad Education
- Brokeback Mountain
- Get Real
- Kissing Jessica Stein
- Making Love
- The Laramie Project
- Milk
- Monster
- The Event
- Summerstorm
- Philadelphia
- Maurice
- The Opposite of Sex
- Rent
- Urbania
- The Bubble
- Do Começo ao Fim (From Beginning to End)
- The Kids Are Alright
- Son frčre (His Brother)
- The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert
- Torch Song
- When Love Comes
- The L Word
- Tarnation

Just OK:
- A Home At The End of The World
- It's My Party
- All Over The Guy
- Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss
- Trick
- Flawless
- Normal
- Party Monster
- Shelter
- High Art
- Adventures of Felix
- To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar
- Queer As Folk (US)

And these are the ones that I don't like.  They are rather crappy (I doubt anybody out there likes them at all):
- The 24th Day
- Circuit
- In & Out
- The Next Best Thing
- The Object of My Affection
- The Broken Hearts Club
- Latter Days
- Noah's Arc
- The Birdcage

And I am sure that I have missed many good ones.

Edit: Had to add 'Tongues Untied' and a couple others.

How could you not have Torch Song on there?   ??? ----- I quoted the ones from your list that I have seen - looks like I have a lot of catching up to do.
I actually liked Broken Hearts Club --- it was cute, funny, and had elements that sparked of reality.

Den: I think it was the one with Doris Roberts working at the ASO,  It also had Timothy Olyphant- here is the IMDB link (for those that haven't seen it, check it out, and let me know what you think) - I thought it was a good gay comedy that reflected the stuggles and cynicism of finding "love" and a relationship in the gay world.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0222850/

Another good movie with a gay/HIV-AIDS theme was Longtime Companion (which Rev has on his list)-

Hmmm... I missed Torch Song.  Just added it to my Pretty (Damn) Good list.

As far as Broken Hearts Club goes I just found it a bit trite.  The acting was crappy.  I think I just hate everything with Dean Cain on it.  For a relatively "mainstream" Hollywood film I will give it some credit --for not being the typical tragedy about AIDS, dumb coming out of the closet story, or melodrama fulla suicidal queens.    I may watch it on Netflix again just to see if my opinion changes now that I'm a bit older and less bitter  ::).

Well, you definitely gave me a lot of viewing to do over the next few weeks..... I may have to renew my netflix - they pissed me off when they changed their plans and prices - so I had to "punish" them for a minute by cancelling my membership.   ;D

Oh crap... That reminds me that I haven't sent those two DVDs back to them.  I switched to their "stream-only" plan as I refuse to pay them twice as much.  They probably billed me for the movies already (and they were rather shitty nonetheless).

I'll second the triteness of this gay abomination and highly recommend resisting a second viewing.

Taxi zum Klo (taxi to the toilet), written, directed and starring Frank Ripploh, is a German, importantly pre-HIV film, and by far my fave queer film after everything by Jarman. and My Beautiful Launderette.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081606/

The scene where he has hepatitis and gets a taxi from the hospital to go cruising is acute, painful, poignant and priceless.

It's also a very funny film.

Just be remastered and rereleased. Has a seqel, Taxi nach Kairo, but never seen it or found it on DVD or download. Probably not as good.

.. or maby balance Taxi Zum Klo with another german gay-movie: Der bewegte man (eng. title: Maybe, maybe not), written by Ralf König(*), starring the very handsome Til Schweiger :P It's such a funny and charming movie. A comedy really. Trailer link (in German - couldn't find one in english)

(*) Quite famous cartoonist and writer etc. who draws hillarious and spot-on gay-cartoons... plase, try a google image search on Ralf König, although I don't know if his work has been translated to english.

Agree about Taxi zum Klo Matt and Meech very sad and funny .The scene off Frank in the playground in belly dancer drag always makes me chuckle, and sitting on the toilet marking papers.

Don't let the fact that it's a musical put you off... or that it is in French... or that it's a love film. I don't like any of these genres but this movie draws you in. Absolutely amazing.

After watching Taxi zum Klo I felt almost as depressed like I did after watching Christiane F. The guy in TZK is on a deroute of self destruction, albeit on another level than the drug addicted Christiane F, but still equally depressing to watch.

Though not gay culture realted, it's still a good film to watch - not for squirmy queens  ;)

I don't know if I have any particular movie that I would call as my favourite.
I think this would be a good thread to go back to.. if I am in a mood for a good gay movie which is often :) Actually, the selection seems like is quite long which is good, more choices!!
