I had the impression it was already an established expression when I was first diagnosed in 2001.

The Medical community refers to it in this way in order not to alarm people.  So if they have an accidental needle jab they may say to go get work done in case of Hi 5, or if they see someone demonstrating the symptoms of AIDS they may use this term to converse about it before tests have been done.

I've never heard anyone in the medical community use this term. It's usually younger, hiv positive people who use it. (in my experience)

I've heard medical friends say when they write a patients dx on the board at the hospital, they will write something like VIH or HI5.  You know what I'm talking about, right?  Hospitals have those patient boards that they write patient info on-- those white boards with erasable markers.  I suppose that helps to conceal info some, but still not the best.  Anyone going by their station can read those white boards.  And, if you speak Spanish, then VIH is the way to write it.

The white boards in the patient room are use to inform the patient about doctors and nurses involve in the patient care, info about test/s that have to be done (MRI, C-Scan, ECHO, EKG etc.), the patient goals, meds schedule, and sometime the dx. But never HIV, Hep C, HPV, or cancer. The only white board with dx that all the nurses can see it it's in the ER. Hope this helps.

When I went for surgeries my Drs all used it Hi V positive

Maybe depends on where you love?

We call it hoop skirt scurvy in the south . A wink and nod and you know the magnolia has wilted .

Of course I have never heard it called this but it could happen .

When my partner was working as an aid worker (not "aids" worker) in South Sudan (with forays into Kenya and Uganda), they called hiv/aids "slim" - due to the weight-loss associated with advanced hiv. This was back in the mid-90s. I don't know if the term is still in use there or not.

I'm fairly sure that's what I have had written -- nobody seems to freak out in a hospital setting about this issue where I live.
