HIV-1 bands
« on: November 20, 2013, 06:53:39 pm »
I just received test results from my new ID doctor who is connected to a very large university research hospital.  I understand most of the tests and their results, but there is one in particular the puzzles me. It shows: HIV-1 Wblot interpretation: Positive - the presence of the bands listed below indicate infection with HIV1 - HIV-1 BANDS PRESENT:    p18, p24, p31, p40, gp41, p51, p55, p65, gp120 and gp160.

My own research indicated that these "bands" merely indicate HIV-1 infection.  But is there any other significance to the bands?  Does it have anything to do with resistance?
One good turn gets most of the blankets.

The bands refer to protein particles from HIV that can be detected by a Western Blot and some other tests. They do not say anything about resistance.

Resistance is detected by doing some sort of genealogy examination (the proper name of the particular lab order) that you will (or at least SHOULD) have done in your next round of labs you will need drawn.  My experience went something like this:

1) Positive Western Blot
2) 2nd round of labs testing for resistance, and viral load plus a ton of other things for the sake of safety (toxoplasmosis and Hepititis just to name a few).

From there my ID doc worked out a gameplan to help manage my future health (getting Hep vaccines, getting on antiretrovirals, etc)
6-7-13 Detected
6-10-13 74949 VL CD4 458 (32%)
6-27-13 Started Stribild
7-29-13 VL 29 CD4 731 (31%)
