ViiV Healthcare Inc. and the pipeline
« on: November 04, 2009, 08:49:24 pm »
Pfizer and GSK made a new company focused on the development of new treatments for HIV. But the pipeline shows nothing else than a new wave of HAART successors which seems to have the same mechanism of action of the current therapies. My question is simple. Let's be optimistic and let's us assume that in 8-10 years we will have efficient gene therapies to treat the disaease, why they continue to invest in old treatment approaches?

As patients I don't think we should put all our eggs in the basket of potential gene therapies -- diversification of approach is in our interest.

They aren't even trying new approaches because they don't see the necessary economic outcome. Perhaps it sounds cynic but it's the only reason why they insist on old treatment methods. Many biotech companies are trying to find valid alternatives to HAART and then we see this newborn company still trying to sale us the old stuff. I don't see any breakthrough in what they have in the pipeline. Perhaps fewer side effects and fewer resistance issues but the substance doesn't really change. We still have to take those new pills for life.

Yes indeed.  The utter audacity of AIDS victims demanding the market find new medications in existing classes with a lower tendency to become resistant to, or simply ones that they have no resistance to.  As someone with multiple resistance issues I really, JUST MUST apologize for consuming so many of your research dollars.

you wouldn't have resistance issues if the treatment approach would be different. instead of making irony you should focus your attention on the fact that unless more powerful strategies will developed to combat the disease you'll not leave this evil circle.

You wouldn't see a breakthrough if it hit you in the face, Mr. Mopey.  There have been plenty of posts about new ways of tackling this problem...from gene therapy to zinc finger proteins.  Turn off your Joy Division and check out the Research News section.
