Specialist asked me to consider talking circuit bout HIV
« on: August 31, 2013, 08:17:30 am »
Ok. So my Dr last time said "I wish you'd go on the talking circuit".

So my question is, what is that exactly?

HIV and AIDS are totally not talked about in Australia.

But I'm far from dumb, and wonder what he meant.

Thanks for any ideas.

Cheers. Auspoz.

Guess he meant being invited to public places, events, schools, etc, to talk about HIV/AIDS.

Auspoz,

I agree with Mecch.

I also suspect that your doctor believes that you will make an effective speaker and resonate with the audience citing your life journey with HIV and the lessons you are learning along the way.

Just my take at first nib.

Hi Auz

I have been doing public speaking in NZ Australia and abroad for 8 years now and the rewards are amazing.

Just talk about what life is like for you living with HIV, and promote safe sex...I know you can do it, NZ is like Australia, very little education at all, they seen to have swept it under the carpet.

It has taken me 6 years to get into the schools but I finally did it and now have three lined up already.

Please do it, you will find it will help you as well, go out there and educate those who are burying their heads in the sand.

Far be it from me to colunteer another person's services, but Anniebc has done lectures and spoken at medical conventions, been flown to several countries to speak over the years, and has had her face on the side of a bus.

If she doesn't write a how-to guide for the novice HIV speaker, she is simply hoarding wisdom :)

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

LOl @ Jonathon.  I only know how to stand up, bang table's and tell medical students, nurses and doctors to pull their fingers out, stop stigmatizing against us and start treating us with the respect we deserve, oh and with a little bit of HIV education thrown in.  But mostly just my story and safety in the work force.

You my dearest Jonathon can educate the specialist with the Knowledge you have, along with a few others I could mention, and one of them has also been on TV, and  with one of my favourite actors.   ;)

The only advise I would give Auz is just do it.

Hi Auspoz,

I think you should do it :)

I'm not sure which state you're in. Positive Life (formerly PLWHA) in NSW has a Positive Speakers Bureau. There's a training course coming up soon.

I'm sure there are similar groups of speakers in most states & territories.

Thank you all. I'm totally private about my status ATM. The scary part for me is "coming out" to all.

I wish I could. Only my parents and (currently distant) friends know. How does that go down? Geez, life would feel easier.
