Atripla dreams?
« on: May 04, 2011, 10:10:28 pm »
My first ever Atripla dream last night was awful..My doctor told me I would have nightmares yesterday after I chose Atripla from the chart of pills he showed me..But Ive read other posts and some people have actually had fun dreams...Anyone other first time Atripla users here that started off with a nightmare right off the bat?

My dreams are vivid, very vivid to the point of seeming real. They have story lines which go on longer than dreams before Atripla. I can also wake up and go back to sleep and return to the dream. While I have never had a nightmare, I have had some dreams that were surreal if that makes sense. I have also had some incredibly sexual dreams on this drug.

I have read quite a bit about the "dream factor." It's caused by Sustiva -- http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001044/ -- which is part of Atripla. A few folks have reported nightmares but that side-effect is more uncommon than common in my unscientific research. (I am not making light of your dreams, just that it seems while a lot of people report vivid and surreal dreams, only a few have classified them as nightmares.)

Are you on any other meds?

If I wake from a nightmare, I have to literally leave the bed for several minutes so drifting back to sleep doesn't put me back into the same horrible dream. I've always been a prolific dreamer and have slept with a notepad by my bed since I was in high school. I have a bulging folder with house layouts, ideas, poetry, all sorts of stuff that I pulled out of my dreams as soon as I woke up. Don't wait too long to write stuff down or it'll fade away forever.

Sustivia gave me wake-up-screaming nightmares back in 98
Chantix (stop smoking med) gave me vivid wake-up-talking-and-gesturing dreams in 08

AC, some people find that what they do, watch or read before going to bed can influence Sustiva dreams. Maybe you could experiment with watching some porn before bed; you might have a fun night. ;)

It's best, especially in the early adjustment period, to watch what you eat before bedtime. Try to not take your Atripla less than two hours after eating. Eating a high fat content meal before taking Atripla can also make the side-effects worse.

Good luck.

Atripla is good and effective, often with few side effects,  but if it ain't working for you there are plenty of dreamless alternatives. Depends on the person. It's your HIV and your meds, not anyone else's (including your doc's).

So far been on Atripla 2 nights and had amazingly funny dreams..

The first night wasn't as funny as the second night though....

Day 1:

Me and the besties went shopping in New York City, we took my new Phaeton, which somehow could fly. When I went in the Armani store I got a BJ from one of the clerks :P

Day 2:
I was dreaming I had a pet flying mini hippo, how weird is that? It slept next to my bed, had a bath on the balcony. Though I caught it swimming in the fishtank one morning and got really mad at it.... It sometimes went for a swim in the sea on its own and was overall a good Little hippo.
First thing I did when I woke up was check if it was next to my bed :S ......

I'm glad I haven't had any dreams whatsoever on this drug. Re- started back on Atripla a few weeks ago and still no dreams but I do wake up feeling drunk and hung over every morning.  Not pleasant.
