I chose Amsterdam.  Not sure if I'll be able to afford it.  I could not choose Mexico City, due to an
unpleasant experience I had with the Mexican authorities in Ciudad Acuna several years ago.  Granted,
Acuna is a border city that is probably a thousand or more miles away from Mexico City, but it left a
lasting impression on me that the Mexican government has too high a level of corruption for me to
feel comfortable.

Regards,

Henry

You really don't want to hear my story about 10 hairy Turkish men in Amsterdam.  And I was only 22.

I found several enchanting coffee shops in the Red Light district of Amsterdam... marijuana from a dessert menu!  Don't even ask me about the live sex show...  suffice to say it has made the saying "double Dutch" very memorable.

Still haven't voted yet... God knows Amsterdam will be terribly expensive, especially with the exchange rate for Americans, but God also knows it is a phenomenal place!

Leaning ever more slightly now towards Amsterdam (and I note for the record that Henry has cast his lot for this great city.)

Still stewing here....

Fearless, Tell me more... it makes Amsterdam sound more like a winner to me! I've never been fortunate enough to have any memoriable stories as such... I was kinda in a FOG the whole time there... I think its the air quality of the coffee shops... or could it be Spice cakes... Whatever? I did have a good time...

If memory serves, those treats were called "Space Cake"... and space is exactly where it sent you.  And once the "munchies" come on, in Amsterdam there are never ending places to indulge the munchies.  I recall pommes frites in a cone shape cup with mayonnaise... sheer heaven!

Only 9 more days to go before next years AMG destination is decided.  Currently Amsterdam and Mexico City are tied.  I appreciate all the enthusiasm next years AMG has already garnered.  However, at this time I have a request to those of you who have voted.  If you have voted and have ABSOLUTELY no desire or the ability to attend I do request that you please remove your vote.  I am only requesting this so next years coordinator will have as true as possible account of the number of possible attendees so the planning process can begin.

And...if you have not voted and plan on attending, please vote now for your preferred destination.

Thank you for your cooperation.

I removed my vote.

(I still might go if it's in Mexico City--hard to say until a location, date, and costs have been worked out--so I'll just wait and see.)

Allow me to clarify my request above.  By all means, please leave your vote as is if you plan on doing your best to attend AMG in the destination you have chosen.  I'm only requesting a vote be removed if you voted just for the sake of voting and have absolutely no intent on attending AMG next year.

Thanks

So, you can only vote if you have the money to attend, is that right? I didn't vote anyway but if I could afford to go I would like to go to Mexico.... Doesn't hurt to dream about it, I guess...

Queen,

My take on this is to vote if you'd like to attend, even if you think you can't afford it. There is no way of knowing at this point what kind of financial aid might be available through the Grants Committee.

One of the reasons I voted for Mexico City is that I think that the relative affordability of Mexico City will enable the Grant Committee to help more members to attend.

I have removed my vote (last week) because it is not likely, I will be able to afford either location.  In the Time of Year vote, I had chosen September.  In all fairness to next years coordinator that vote should be eliminated also.  I had the best day and then some in San Francisco but that will most likely be the only AMG I will ever be able to attend.  Have the best day

Thanks for posting that, Allan.  That's exactly why I voted for M.C.  There are lots of places I'd rather visit, but keeping it within reach of the greatest number of members is what I'm aiming for.

It was a tough call for me. Even though in Ams I will be able to attend 100%, whereas MC depends on money and time off from work, I decided to go with Mexico. Because of the weather, that is really undependable here and was crap this Sep, & because I like to travel and haven't dared to step out of Europe since the diagnosis and this would be a good start. I also hope to meet local pozzies there. Maybe my BF will come too, I hope it's OK since he is not poz.

I voted for Mexico City for several reasons.

One was the affordability of traveling there and of accommodations.

Another is the affordability of everything else. Remember, having a room doesn't mean you will be able to afford food, etc.

I would love to go to Amsterdam. But with the dollar in its present state, it is just not a tenable situation.

I voted for Mexico City... but would really love to go back to Amsterdam.  In the end, i think it is important for the U.S. community to be able to attend and I fear that would be greatly compromised in Europe this year.  I do think we should try to get to Europe (not to mention Asia/Pacific sometime as well) but perhaps when economic conditions are better.

I will try to attend regardless of destination.

As a part of ongoing education in my legal practice, I have begun learning Spanish.  A trip to Mexico City next year may be helpful to be professionally as well as personally.

I would also like to go to Amsterdam but feel Mexico City is far less costly with our American dollar so devalued against most major foreign currencies.  Also the pyramids sound like that would be fun.   So I hope to get to Amsterdam sooner than later, every day being so precious as it is.

Mexico City is a lot less expensive than Amsterdam. For Europeans, the cost of the airfare would be greatly (if not completely) offset by the lower cost of accommodations, food, and travel within Mexico.

The flight from Europe to Mexico City is very long, but an AMG in Amsterdam would entail a very long flight for U.S. members, especially those living on the west coast.

AIDSmeds members are scattered around the world. There is no one place that is going to be convenient for everyone. No matter where the AMG is held, some people will be "compromised."

Yes Mexico City would be fun, and I have wanted to go there. Yes my poor pitiful dollar would go farther there.....but I have dreamed of going to Amsterdam. So I voted for Amsterdam. Either would be fine and I would go to either...as long as my poor little American dollars haven't run dry.

Hmmm.  33-30 is very close.  Does this mean those who voted for Amsterdam would not/cannot go to Mexico City and those who voted for Mexico City would not/cannot go to Amsterdam?  Or are there those who voted who can do either?  Tough to say with this poll and the corresponding response.  There were only a few who said they'd do either one.  It would be hard to see 30 people who would really like to come unable to join because they voted for the place that did not get chosen.  Maybe 2 sets of gatherings can be entertained and organized by 2 sets of organizers and those who could do either one can just choose?  Just a thought.

It's not that I wouldn't like to go to Amsterdam, it's just cost prohibitive for me and I'm sure Mexico is cost prohibitive for some of them. Having two AMGs may not be a bad idea. I'm sure the folks in this group can figure out a solution. But if we are going to do it that way I don't see a reason to have it in Mexico. There are plenty of places in the US I haven't seen.

I think considering two events is not a bad idea.  Voting based on cost to Americans will unfortunately almost always mean that the event will be held in North America (even when the dollar is strong, you still have to contend with the fact that Europe is generally more expensive than America).  That means that AMG will remain a mostly American attended event.  It all becomes a selffulfilling prophecy.  But I don't think there is anything wrong with that.  I would expect someone to vote their pocketbook.

While the UK and Europe have strong currencies, I don't believe that a choice between AMS and Mexico is neutral in terms of cost (and certainly not on flight times).  Going to Mexico will be costly and the flights will be long.  Flights within Europe are cheap and short (most European capitals are within a 2-3 hour flight from each other).

If there is an interest in having an AMG-type event that is closer (and more affordable) for Europe-based members, then that should be on the table as well.  I doubt most North America-based members would have an issue with that.

Having one big event is a nice idea, but it's always going to exclude someone and if the event is always held in North America, it's generally going to exclude people living outside of North America.

Didn't someone say that if the event grew larger than last years that it would become difficult to coordinate anyway?  What's been the trend line from the past three years in terms of growth of attendees, and considering that what would be the projected amount of people for next year?

In response to Philly's question, I believe the first AMG in Toronto in 2005 was attended by about 20 people; this was followed by a mini-gathering in Nashville which I think attracted close to the same number of folks.

The AMG in Montreal in 2006 was in the low 40's and this was followed by an Amsterdam mini-gathering that was attended by about 10 folks.

The AMG in San Francisco this year was attended by close to 50 folks and there was not a second mini-gathering that followed it.

The number of attendees is most definitely influenced by the location of the event.  But I presume there are more European members now than there has been in the past; thus the stronger interest in a European location (than say if this was polled 2 years ago).

If there is a good enough number of interested people to hold a gathering in Amsterdam and most of them cannot make it to a North American location, I don't think they should abandon organizing a gathering there just because that location was out-voted.

I believe it was Dennis who said if the event grew larger than 50, it would be much more difficult to organize.

Just a thought about the two gatherings idea that is floating around.  An earlier concern I voiced about this idea was about the fund raising/grant process and how that could possible open up a can of worms similar to what we just experienced with the voting of location itself.

I think the AMG should remain one official gathering versus two. Personally, I did vote for Amsterdam, but I also stand by the decision of the board vote that the event is in Mexico City this year.

Do we have a coordinator for the 2008 AMG? Dennis set up the polls for the time and destination, but I don't recall that he ever formally took on the role as coordinator for the next AMG.

You are correct, Allan.  I have not officially taken on the roll as the coordinator for AMG '08.  I would be more than happy to participate in this capacity.  However, if the group would care to nominate other for the roll, please feel free to do so.  If I shoud take on this roll I would not be able to do much until after the holidays are over and I clear up a few personal matters.

Based on the group vote AMG 08 will be held in Mexico City.  September was the time of year voted on by the participating members.  The time of year is open for discussion though.

I agree, Jody.  He did a wonderful job.  So, how do we nominate Dennis as the coordinator for AMG '08?  Can I just say that I nominate Dennis?   ;)

David,

I second your nomination!  Dennis rocked last year and we would be silly not to accept his offer to continue in this role for AMG 08.

Dennis, I hope that your plate will allow your continued service in this very special role.  You are a natural.

Regards, Ric

Lance and I vote for Dennis!

He did a more than bang up job!  In fact above and beyond with the help of David NC, Allan, Gerry and some I have not mentioned.  On a side note, those fortunate enough to see him laying (Dennis) on the hill at Golden Gate Park know what we are talking re: those nice legs!  Thanks for the reminder Mike!  We have pic's Dennis... 8)
