Title: omg EARTHQUAKE
Post by: Miss Philicia on August 23, 2011, 01:57:31 pm
There was just a large earthquake in the Mid-Atlantic, the USGS site shows it in Virginia but my entire apartment building swayed enough to knock a bottle of bourbon of a shelf in my kitchen and my flat screen TV swayed. I felt like I was on a ship at sea and feel slightly nauseous, and people ran out of buildings onto the street.

Was this your first Earthquake?  The idea of them scares me senseless, but my geographical region isn't prone to them.

Fuck, it was a 5.8 near Richmond, VA according to the news. Yes, it was really weird to feel for my first time -- scary.

Seriously, there's no way he could not have felt it -- I just read a friend in Ashburn, VA that felt it and that's 25 miles west of DC.

HOLY SHIT -- the water was splashing out of the pool and my bookcase needs some reordering now..........  It sounded like a 747 was coming in for a landing on top of my house.  Perhaps that is why I couldn't find the cat a little bit earlier............

Earthquake today -- hurricane on Sat/Sun -- It's the END OF DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!

Sissy T in Richmond says she had some plaster come off the walls but that was about it. Apparently quake was centered west of Richmond. Her hubby is a buliding inspector in Fredericksburg and he is saying there is some minor structural damage downtown in some of the old buildings.

so freaky

We got it here in Lancaster to.  Not as bad as elsewheres, it felt like a big truck going past the house.

I think the earthquakes should stay in California.

Tried calling my boyfriend in Chester county and cell phone isn't working.  :(

Wonder if we will get anything from hurricane Irene.

Here's an odd report from NYC: about a half hour ago the super and a neighbor from two flights up came and rang my bell. She said she was sitting in her living and suddenly things started shaking.

Wanted to know if I had felt it. I was in the same line of rooms all the time at my computer.

Spoooooooookeeee. So did we get some of that earthquake too and how come I didn't feel it?

Stay tuned.

Knowing what I do of you so far David... it was not cheap liquor at all.  I bet all of downtown Phila (as well as the I-95 corridor down to Richmond) was in an uproar.

::pops klonopin to calm my nerves::

Thank goodness I was leaving for a shrink appointment right when this hit :)~~~

Oh, and they shut the southbound Broad Street subway due to suspected cracks and I had to take a bus home. Here's the City of Brotherly love evacuating buildings, which I snapped 15 minutes after the quake:

Buildings were evacuated here in north-central WV.  We didn't feel it in the woods, but about 5 miles away, a neighbor called to make sure we were OK.  She said it rocked her chair and scared her to death.  A city building lost its chimney and another city building about 15 miles away lost parts of its gargoles.  My brother called from LA to make sure we were OK.  I guess it would have to hit above a 10 before we could tell the difference between an earthquake and the kids running around. ;)

Glad you're OK, Philly.

I just got back in town from a brief trip to DC -
I had the worst case of gas while I was there -
I kept farting - it felt like I was shaking the whole city...
And then I get off the plane and find out that CNN has mistakenly reported an earthquake in DC area -
I don't know if I should call and let them know it was just me with a bad case of gas or not, I mean, I don't think I could be responsible for the repairs - afterall it wasn't planned, just a few too many burritos....

I'm now back in Florida and still letting silent but deadly ones go ----- actually feels like the wind is blowing - that is how bad my gas is ---- if it gets much worse, I'm sure they will say that a hurricane must be near by - when in fact, it is just Phil and his gas...   ::)
 :o :o :o

But seriously..... glad those members impacted by the quake are all okay.

Glad to know Mike and Sid are OK in Va and others like Mini and mom and family are too.  Mike and Sid were by far the closest major urban area to the epicenter.  It's indeed ironic they both just left Seattle which is far more prone to earthquakes then Virginia is.  But as they say if it has been 130 years or so since the last major one, or at least substantial enough to discuss it then many areas including New York may be overdue for an earthquake or major hurricane.

Andy -  your experience is not unusual regarding earthquakes.  I lived in Los Angeles and felt one once while working on the 35th floor of what was then the Union Bank building in downtown LA and the building really swayed and stuff fell off shelves, boxes of paper and what not.  But while others in town didn't feel it not that far away folks way off in Nevada felt it.  Today's was supposedly felt as far away as Toronto to the north and Georgia to the south but your neighbor felt it and others in New York did not.  My mother in NJ said it sounded like car trouble outside her apartment.

Anyway, glad everyone is fine physically and mentally.

Jody

When I experienced a minor Earthquake in LA, the effect on self was major, the ground is not meant to move and when it does its a Bad thing, waiting for a really bad thing just shows the human beings ability to live with massive amounts off denial, as in not beliething in global warming as if it is a faith,Oh well keep well and cozy everyone. Its a relief there is not more grief.

A 5.9?

Could you even feel it?

We had a 7.8 in los angeles the morning of pride 1992.  All went as planned despite the temblor and, by the time we arrived at the festival, they had t shirts for sale calling it "queerquake."
I still have mine.

East coast quakes are different than west coast ones -- effect a much larger area and aren't far from the surface (1/2 mile). They felt this one in London, Ontario.  Try reading the news.

Actually all it takes is coming to the South in summer. Friends from the West visit and just go on and on about "God it's hot! It's so humid I can't breathe! I'm sweating! This is messing up my hair!  Is that pollen in the air? I have allergies!"

Earthquake update:

The Weather Channel is reporting that the quake was caused by a previously unknown fault running below DC. It is now being called Obama's Fault, though Obama will say it is really Bush's fault.

Another theory is that what we thought was an earthquake was actually the effects of a 14.6 trillion dollar check bouncing in Washington.

Yes, I know about the geology of the East Coast. I also know that there are no mountain ranges to inhibit the shock waves from a temblor and that they can be felt long distances.

But, a 5.9 is a 5.9.

If it had been a 7.8, the Washington Monument would probably be a pile of rubble and many people may have died, not necessarily because of the intensity, but because much of the East Coast construction is not made to withstand earthquakes.

I am glad it was a minor quake.

I hope you all fare as well with Irene.

HUGS,

Mark
