Supposed advanced judgment and reasoning apparently does not innoculate people against ignorance, just as being once-oppressed does not necessarily enlighten people to the trials of others.  Than again, it could be part of a vast right-wing conspiracy to prop up the Harper government in Canada and help out the social conservatives here in the U.S.

Living in Georgia the Judge's attitude doesn't suprise me at all. What's really shocking is that the Judicial Council doesn't have any information that it presents to Judges specificly on HIV/AIDS.

An official with the National Judicial Institute in Ottawa, which has developed educational programs for judges, said while the curriculum addresses "emerging social issues," there's no course specifically addressing HIV/AIDS – though one is being planned. It should be up and running within "a couple of years," she said.
:o
so AIDS is just now an "emerging social issue" in Canada, huh? You'd think after it's been around for more than 20 yrs now that it should have already been in the curriculum. Plus it'll take "a couple of yrs" yet to get added? That means that it'll be 30yrs or more into this epidemic before they tackle the subject.

it's just another story showing how much stigma still abounds, how little education there is, how little that education works, and how little the populace knows about this disease. Very sad.

this is truly amazing in this day and age, and after 20 years (?) of HIV/aids knowledge being out there, that someone could be so misinformed, especially someone that one would assume to be highly educated (ok, at least in legal matters)

IMO, it shows that Canada needs to fund HIV/aids education considerably more!

regardless, its goddamn shocking!

I'm sure there are others just about as ignorant. We need better HIV/AIDS education.

Ignorance is bliss...until you are faced with a situation like this. If I were the witness I would have refused to testify. Filed a complaint about being mistreated by the judge to get him off my case.

I somehow can't believe he is that ignorant... maybe a wacko like all those aidsphobics that habitually post bizarre questions. Here it's not so bad - at least they obssesively go on about some sort of sexual contact most times - on Israeli message boards it's all about if a poz person could have sat in that chair, been on that bus, visited that mall etc. Somewhere they do actually know better, but just can't help themselves.

Or maybe he just wants to humiliate someone if he has the chance. Esp someone he sees as dirty and inferior. To makes himself feel big and powerful... He reminds me of the badbreathed, bigoted dentist I just changed for one who will actually treat me. His nasty leery face reminds me of him too... Like who would want to sit close to him anyway. The further the better.

While the ignorance of the judge is certainly to be condemned, the real issue is that he has created a bias against both the witness and accused based on facts that are irrelevant to the case.  I believe the fact that he is so ignorant about HIV is a reflection on his bigotry against those with HIV and I am sure that he believes that all people with HIV somehow are deserving of their fate and the world must be protected from them.  If no formal review is conducted, then this judge will have totally undermined the tenants of the law in providing for a fair and impartial trial.  And the only way this judge could be so ignorant about HIV is that he wants to be, because the court has surely had other participants that were similarly infected.

If nothing else, the defendant in this case, if convicted, will have a solid basis for an appeal.

I can imagine how humiliated the witness was.  I recently read an article about a 19 year having to live like this at home.  Upon finding out his status, his mom would not allow his siblings to use any object he came into contact with, which meant he was forced to use plastic/paper utensils, plates and cups for meals.

Sad at the amount of ignorance out there.  Though being a supposedly well-educated judge, sitting on the Board of a medical institution takes the cake.

I think the judge really shows his ignorance due to it appearing that he doesn't realize he's likely eaten food prepared by an HIV+ individual in a restaurant.  I wonder if he thinks every waitperson, cashier, bank teller, judicial employee, people whose hands he shakes, etc is HIV-.  The fact that the doesn't draw any conclusion to his remaining HIV- after having contact with the public in general just doesn't show a logical thought process.  I mean, if somebody can catch the bug from just being in the same room as an HIV+ individual, why the big deal about safe sex?  Wouldn't we see lots more people walking the streets with masks on?  I don't buy the argument that he just doesn't know about HIV; he didn't bother to become informed, stood his ground when told he was mistaken, and doesn't seem to be a very insightful person in genersl... not somebody I'd want for a judge.

Of course this is disgusting. I wish I could say this kind of ignorance and bigotry is rare, but in my experience is isn't.

The overall general population of the world is afraid of HIV/AIDS. Many respond by wanting to pretend it can't or won't touch them. Or just closing their ears and eyes. It's too frightening or they think it is, to become familiar with what it's about, how it's really transmitted and all of the basics. Of course the terrible irony is that by closing themselves from real knowledge they actually become more vulnerable.

And with their fear comes hatred and ignorance as they want to seal off, stigmatize and even kill those who are HIV positive. Even here in NYC which is still the epicenter of the epidemic in the US, if I get into an HIV-related conversation with someone, when I just say some very simple ABCs about the subject, I can tell by their reaction that it's all NEWS to them. And this is NYC! So it's now surprise that in a less cosmopolitan setting there's going to be even more unknowingness.

It's downright discouraging. I know if we sat all of Congress down and asked them some basics about the disease for which they need to appropriate funds our questions would be met with blank faces. Please believe me, right here among the members of this site there is more real knowledge of the disease and its realities than in most of the so-called "real world" out there.

Sure it's been over 20 years of epidemic. But one thing that has never changed is that an awful lot of the world has never wanted to know or look clear eyed at what the epidemic is about. How we will ever change that is for sure a great, great challenge.

That's one of the reasons I so appreciate this site where truth is being spoken and shared about the real world of HIV.

End of my Thursday afternoon rant.

I didn´t read this message and I posted yesterday the same article. Ann notified me that it was already Posted. I was so surprised when somebody sent to me that I couldn´t believe that a person who is in charge of making justice or administering laws could have such believes.
Nevethless, it is important to make it public throughtout all means to state that prejudices, stigma and ignorance are presente between those who believe themselves well educated. They have to be far from areas where there are lifes and persons at stake.
