My HIV/AIDS Newspaper Article
« on: June 21, 2013, 02:03:07 am »
I've been doing some cleaning and organization lately.  I finally found the box with my old yearbooks, grades, and all my copies of our high school newspaper.  I was a reporter and then promoted to editor.

The first newspaper I pulled out of the box had a front page tease about an HIV/AIDS story on page 3.  I eagerly turned to page 3, to see who wrote it and how they wrote it in 1993.  I was surprised that I wrote it.  I had totally forgotten I wrote a story about HIV.  But, the memory came back.  Anyway, thought I would share it.  I am proud I wrote a story about HIV.  I guess I was 16 at the time.  It didn't help me, but maybe it helped someone.  I hope it helped to dispel misinformation about casual contact transmission.

I do see where the term AIDS is used, when HIV should be.  But, I remember so many referred to the virus as AIDS, even when HIV would be the appropriate term.  The part about knowing your partner's sexual history reminds me of the HIV episode of "Golden Girls.". "Blanche" says she got tested, but she now makes sure to know the complete history of her partners, and takes appropriate precautions.  That just seems silly, besides being a terrible way of determining whether you need to use a condom.  Without the internet, all the research came from pamphlets, books, and the health department.

Always remember that AIDS continues on page 8...Lol.  For those who do read it, you'll probably have to zoom in.

Hey, Ted, nice find!

That "AIDS is continued on page 8" reminds me of a recent class I took on Coursera called "AIDS". Most of the messages are created by database, so I got e-mails saying things like "Welcome to AIDS!" for a while there.
