So here I am at my computer, looking over the latest forum posts. The house just shook for about five seconds. Nothing terrible, but it's getting very unnerving. We've had so many small earthquakes over the past few months, and most of them are centered just a few miles from my house on the Hayward fault. I don't know the strength of this one, but I would guess 3.5.

I hope this isn't a sign that "the big one" is imminent!

It was only a 3.0, centered in the Berkeley hills about 4 miles from me.

I didn't feel this one, but I rarely feel one smaller than a 4. Didn't notice until I read about it on SFGate.

A 5.0 would offer you a tid-bit you would not forget. A nice shake and rattling of things on shelves.

Yea I experienced a 3.5 and a 5.2. The 5.2 came few seconds after a 3 something which is unusual, but it actually helped not freak out because it was like having a warning.

What's it like? The 3.5 felt like an 18 wheeler just hit my house. It was my first experience and I freaked out AFTER the fact, because I didn't know what it was when it happened. The 5.2 was scary because there was more shaking and lasted for a longer time, about 20 seconds, i was on the balcony and i had my feet going one way and my hands on the handrail going the other way. What is the most impressive to me is the very deep rambling sound.

If you want to experience an earthquake, don't ask for more than 4.0.

We recently had a 5.3 here in Hawaii. Friends and I were in a restaurant 2 miles from the epicenter. The whole building moved like it was on wheels, about 6 feet one direction and then back. Felt somewhat like being on a large ship in water. When we got home (8 miles from the epicenter) it looked like the house had been ransacked.... cupboard doors open, contents splattered on the floor, art and art objects thrown from shelves....
went room to room being amaze at the way things were thrown about. Fortunately not too much broken and no structural damage. The geologists measure 600 earthquakes a day here (we are very near active lava flow). Most of them are not felt and cause no damage. But one or two times a year we get a big one that you definitely feel!

lol i think ill cancel my trip to san francisco...i completly forgot about earthquakes YIKES i can deal with hurricanes fine but ive never been in an earthquake....

Thunter i have your luck also so with both of us there we better stay away from sharp objects.....

The hospital where I work is built on large coiled springs to prevent damage in a significant earthquake.

I've been at work several times and could feel the energy wave go thru the hospital. It IS like something just slams into the building, and moves so quickly it's hard to realize what is immediately going on.

At home, my heart always starts to race if I hear the building creak because I know that's just the first sign of shaking to come. BTW, nothing hanging on the wall above the bed or within falling distance of the bed either.

I've been through a couple of big ones (a 6.9 that lasted for 58 seconds in Peru, and I was living in Los Angeles in '94 when the Northridge quake hit, and a few others).

The initial jolts were pretty exciting, to be honest. Both happened in the very early hours of the morning and woke me up, and sent me running to a door frame. The adrenaline rush was intense...

The aftershocks scare me more than the initial events.

There are earth quakes all over the USA and the world but, most are not felt... the earth is always vibrating... Philly watch the history channel... the New Madrin fault near St Lois and Memphis TN...will send a big quake all over the eastern seaboard... its due within the next 50 years... it could happen tommarrow? they just do not know when. The destruction will come mainly from man made objects not designed to withstand the movements from the ground beneath. The plates of the earth are in constant motion... its when they give were in trouble.. What can you do about it? Nothing... I was in San Francisco in the late 80's a few days before one hit ... I told a friend who lived there I did not like driving on the bridge... a double decker bridge... he reassured me it was earth quake proof? Right a few days after I left thats when the bridge collapsed ... alot of damage was done to earthquake proof designs...

Oh, so funny you should mention that one. I was watching it last night while this thread was in action and I guess you were too (?) I already knew about the New Madrid fault though before last night. There's also a small fault around Charleston, SC.

Rich, consider yourself lucky. A little earthquake is kind of fun for a visitor to experience, but when they happen as often as they have been for the last six months or so, they're scary. Almost all of them have been located on the Hayward Fault, just a few miles from my little house. A few months ago I was shaken out of bed by a 4.2.

I think the reason you haven't been feeling them might be because you live in San Francisco, and they're all been centered across the bay in the Oakland/Berkeley area. (Although I'm sure that even in San Francisco, you'd feel anything bigger than about a 4.5)

I read something about the New Madrid fault..yeah, that will be a killer one next time it goes off...they said they felt that one as far south as Georgia. There as a big quake in the Gulf of Mexico not too long ago, but no shaking or Tsunami.

Alan, I live in San Jose now...I couldn't deal with the commute to work anymore ( I work right off the 237 in Milpitas)...and definitely no quakes felt here. I did feel that 4.2 in May, I was still in the city and it was one of those rolling ones...I always look at the dogs when the rolling ones hit because I think it is the dogs bumping into the sofa until the breaking news say EARTHQUAKE...LOL

Anything around 4 and bellow is OK, even fun and exciting, but I don't want to get hit with a big one...(Earthquake that is...)

I didn't feel this one but I do not live on the Hayward fault. I lived on San Andreas Road in Aptos/ Rio Del Mar/Santa Cruz while in college. That house shook a little every day. If a quake hits just do what I do and we will all be fine. Have the best day

Couple of years ago I was awakened on a Sunday morning by the bed shaking.

Staggered downstairs and yelled at my partner for kicking the bed and waking me up.

Then i turned on the TV and saw that there was a swarm of quakes in the Danville area all between 4-5 in intensity.
