Can you seroconvert after the 13 week period?

hello hows everyone...seems like there are some very intelligent people here with good info and advice so i have a question....

about 3 months ago I was in NYC for christmas....i visited a gay bath house when I was there and met this guy when I was taking a shower...we ended up messing around for a little bit...and finally he got on top of me and we had unprotected anal sex...but i think i was inside him for no more then 2 minutes...and like i said he was on top of me...and i dont think i was all the way in....i ended up cumming inside him and then he got up...and i wiped it off and took a shower.....should i worry much or no? i havent had any symptoms really...besides some pain around my lower neck and chest...but i dont think my lymph nodes are swollen...ive been seen my doctor about 8 weeks ago...and he told me nothing was swollen...and that the pain i was feeling was the radiation from my acid reflux i was diagnosed with back in september.....the pain feels kind of sharp...but nothing feels swollen...and it actually feels like the pain is comin from the top part of my shoulders and collar bone...i also feel pain in my chest....i got tested for HIV on Monday and should get results back soon....can anyone please help me? and what does tender to the touch mean in regards to swollen lymph nodes in ur neck?

Yng, your symptoms are totally irrelevant. Just in general you need to know for the future that neither the presence nor the absence of symptoms will ever tell you accurately about your HIV status. Only an HIV test at 13 weeks can give you a conclusive answer about that.

And yes, you did have a risk. Unprotected anal intercourse is a high risk for HIV. It's less of a risk for the insertive partner, which you were in this case, but it's still a risk. So you do need to get tested. From what you report of the time frame, you can do that anytime now and get a reliable result.

Given that it was a single, brief incident the odds are you are going to test negative. But you need to learn from this experience. You can have intercourse with anyone regardless of their HIV status. But you need to do it the safer way. That means whoever is the insertive partner must always be wearing a condom. No exceptions no matter what you think you know about the guy's history or how great he looks or whatever. A condom is a must.

So get yourself tested and collect what I hope and expect will be a negative result.

If your symptoms persist that's something to discuss with your doctor. Oh, and keep your hands off of your lymph nodes. They are very sensitive. By squeezing or pressuring them you can create a problem where there isn't one.

thanks very much Mr. Velez you were very helpful...but the symptoms i mentioned...does it sound like my lymph nodes are swollen or is it something else? i feel sharp pains at the bottom my neck...and also around my collar bone and chest and sometimes my back...my doctor said it was probably reflux cause my neck didnt look or feel swollen....what do u think?

We do not discuss symptoms here because neither symptoms nor the lack of symptoms will tell you a single thing about your hiv status - only testing at the appropriate time will. We cannot diagnose you over the internet - nobody can - so you'll have to see your doctor about symptoms.

wow the most unbelievable thing happened to me last night....i had posted a week ago that i had a sexual encounter with a guy in NYC back in December (over 3 months ago)...i was the insertive partner...and fucked him for less then 2 minutes anally...i dont even think i was all the way in him...cause he was on top of me....either way i came inside of him and that was that....jus yesterday he emailed me and told me that he was HIV poz and had been for 12 years....completely shocking i literally passed out and had to be sent to the emergency room last night...i had a talk with the doctor and let him know about my experience and he told me straight up to not really worry about it...he said yes i was at a risk but being the insertive partner and not having experienced ANY kinds of symptoms since then he told me that he doubts that I was goin to be infected...that was a pretty bold statement to make without any blood work but still he told me not to worry and that i should be fine....anyone else have any advice...

The risk assessment you've already had is still valid as we always assume the other person is hiv positive. So re-read your thread as our answers are not going to change.

It's unfortunate that you had a doctor who puts stock in symptoms - because as you've been told, symptoms or even the LACK of symptoms mean nothing where hiv is concerned. I know plenty of people who had no seroconversion symptoms but yet tested positive.

Like Andy, I fully expect you to test hiv negative following this one-time, insertive incident, so cut the dramatics. Just don't push your luck and keep going bareback.

one of the most powerful things i have come across about regaeding safe sex. its ok to say NO GLOVE NO LOVE. stop being polite when it comes to sex and stand up for your rights. a person attitude to safe sex is a good indication as to whether or not you should be screwin around with them.

I have a serious question. I was exposed to an HIV poz guy in New York over 5 months ago. I was the top and he was the bottom, I got tested for HIV about 14 weeks after the exposure and the results came back negative. Recently I was in the hospital and the doctor found a small swollen lymph node in the back of the left side of my neck. I have no symptons, no pain, no fever, night sweats or anything. The doctor told me that since I havent had any pain that the lymph node swelling was not caused by infection. Should I worry? Please help if you can.

You've conclusively tested hiv negative for the incident you're worried about. Unless you've been barebacking again since that incident, whatever is going on with you is guaranteed to have nothing to do with hiv. You don't have hiv.

If you continue to worry about your swollen node, seek out a second opinion. Whatever is going on has nothing to do with hiv.

I hope you've been using condoms, correctly and consistently, since your bath-house wake-up call.

You are HIV negative. The only exceptions to needing to test beyond 13 weeks are if longtime intravenous drug use is involved, an organ transplant or a severe illness such as cancer is involved. Otherwise 13 weeks is a reliable testing point for a reliable result.

You do need to learn from this experience. You scooted by safely this time but you can't count on that happening again or every time. When you have intercourse without using a condom you are putting your life at risk. It's as real as that. The risk is lower for the guy topping but it's risk nevertheless. Have all the anal sex you want to, but do it the safer way: always use a condom.
