The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby
English will be the official language of the European Union rather
than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that
English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-
year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English" .
In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will
make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in
favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have
one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the
troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like
fotograf 20% shorter.
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted
to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.
Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have
always ben a deterent to akurate speling.
Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag
is disgrasful and it should go away.
By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th"
with "z" and "w" with "v".
During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords
kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensi bl
riten styl.
Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu
understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.
Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in
ze forst plas.

Don't piss on my continent, and don't piss on my language, we're only lending it to you til Spanish gets established in Boston, then we're having it back. The EU administration is stupid but then you got The Hill.

http://german-way.com/blog/2009/03/03/downside-of-english-as-universal-language/
I have always felt jilted that our schools don't make learning another language a requirement instead of an elective. I took Spanish, German and a smattering of Russian. I can look at Italian and French and figure out what is being said from my Spanish and German.
I am 'Scandinavian' descent...Finnish/German..if you saw my last name you would know the German..immediately ::)
I have been working with Katie on Spanish....
"just look at the root of the 'foreign' word and you will see the English word right in it" ::)...most English has just been borrowed from the mixture of all the cultures that came to live here...
"oh, I see the English, but how do you know what to put around it to make it Spanish/German/etc?"
"it'll come to you"....

Hey newt, I was stationed in Germany for 4 yrs. in the service, I loved that place, I made a lotta of friends
when it was time for me to go back home State-side, all my German buddies cried their eyes out, knowing that they might not never see me again, I'm still in contact w/ only 2 of them, we still write, and call each other after all these yrs. ;)

Amen. I had to learn the proper spelling of many words like colour because I love crossword puzzles. Now the Americanised spellings look so wrong to me.
[rant] One thing I can't get my head around though is how some words are pronounced. Like schedule. Why is it pronounced with a soft sh sound while school is not? Privacy is another one. If privacy is pronounced with a short I sound, then why aren't things done in private - pronounced like the hedge (privet)? It boggles my mind. And then there's the word clerk - heads up, there's no A in the word! Same thing for derby - NO A! [/rant]

I don't know either Ann and I'm British :D :D
I think the private/privacy thing is because the "e" makes the "I" a long sound and then it's dropped in privacy..but don't quote me on that!

I've heard others make the same comment about the dropped "e", but there are other words where the "e" is dropped for different forms of the word and it doesn't change their pronunciation, so I don't buy that excuse. But duh, I can't think of any examples right now. I'm feeling a little brain-dead today after drowning my sorrows last night with the rest of my pool team after our 9-nil trouncing at the hands of The Baltic. Well, they are at the top of the league table and we're bottom. hehehehehe... we're a bunch of bottoms! ;D eh, we have fun and that's what counts. (or so we keep telling each other!)
