A Tribute to My Aunt
« on: September 20, 2009, 05:42:16 pm »
I've said I was going to make a cool gift for my stepmom, and now I've finally done it. I made a shadowbox shrine to my Aunt.

Aunt Kathy passed in February, and I saved most of the roses  from the service and dried and sprayed them to preserve them. I had been thinking of making something with the roses for my stepmom, who had grown very close to my Aunt over the years, and I came up with the idea for a Mexican-style altar honoring my aunt.

In it are her high school grad photo, some of the roses, many pieces of jewelry, her name from a ribbon in one of the sprays from the funeral, some pins from her nursing career, a piece of a license frame from the car I ended up with (love it!) a Lucy figurine I found in her apartment and another one that I had bought her for a birthday present and didn't get to her in time.

I really like the way it turned out.  I would actually like to keep it but it was made for someone else and she doesn't know about it, but I bet she will love it. It's about 13" x 17" and can hang or sit somewhere.

It's beautiful Creighton..a wonderful thought.

Pardon my ignorance but why is it called a "shadowbox"?

Don't worry, B. She will love it. What she will love even more is the time and effort you put into it.

A shadowbox is basically a picture frame with depth--a box with glass on the front, so you can put objects inside instead of just flat pictures.

That is really fantastic  :)  I'm sure your Aunt is looking down and smiling.  I'm wondering why the Avon was on it - was she an Avon rep?

Basquo,

How beautiful and thoughtful a gift.

Have you thought about photographing it and creating a full-size transparency for yourself which you could then frame and backlight?

Creighton, that was very nice. Your mother will appreciate it more than you'll ever know.

It's beautiful, and she will love it honey.   I love shadowboxes.   My brother made a fabulous one of my parents (both deceased) with their high school pics/diplomas/rings, etc....
