Wanting to work as a vet tech but......
« on: September 19, 2007, 09:16:39 am »
I want to go to technical school for training as a veterinary tech.  My health provider doesnt think its a good idea because of exposure to feces/blood of animals but i would be wearing protective gear.  In order to be in the program, the programs advisors suggest that its a good idea to have a rabies vaccination and a tetanus vaccination.  Can the vaccinations  make me ill? especially the rabies vaccination?  i really want to be in this school program but have people telling me I shouldnt get the vaccinations etc?  what s the real scoop on the health situation about that.

What has your health provider said about those shots?

For instance I know that some people who aren't HIV+ have had intense reactions to a rabies shot. First stop would be to clear this with your doctor, setting aside for the moment the other considerations you've raised about possible exposures.

Also, have you spoken with any vet professional(s) with whom you can be open about HIV and get their responses? And what specifically would be involved in your work as a vet tech?

I am a firm believer in going for what you want. Just want to be sure you're properly protected.

as andy says, rabies shot(s) can be quite unpleasant in terms of reactions - but both rabies & tetanus shots are "safe" for people with hiv (both inactivated vaccines) If you can prove you've had tetanus < 10years ago you may not need to repeat

unless yr immune system is severely compromised, i can't see a problem with you working as a vet tech - most of the ones i know seem to have a fondness for the latex +  plastic apron look anyway  :)

good luck - kate
