Had unprotected sex, starting atripla

I have had unprotected sex with random guys I  know to be hive poz. I know its really bad but its done. I have just started treatment on atripla. I'm afraid of resistance issues.  Not sure anyone can actually do anything about my post, I just needed to post.  I haven't had sex in a while, I guess I'm just afraid of my new treatment not working.

It is supposed to be standard practice to get a resistance test done before you start meds these days.  Did your doctor do a genotype?  If so, (s)he knows if you have any resistance to start with and has factored that info in before starting you on ATRIPLA.

And if you are not resistant to start with, the best way not to develop resistance is to be very precise in taking your medication as ordered, expecially at first.

Um, have you had an HIV test yet?  That would be the first step....

Who the heck prescribed Atripla for you if you haven't been confirmed as HIV-positive?  If you "haven't had sex in a while," it's too late for post-exposure prophylactic (PEP), I would assume.

That was the first thing I wondered when I started to read the post. Although my test came back positive and my CD4 came back low enough to start meds, and I as insistant I start Atripla immediately, my doctor insisted I wait until my VL and Genotype tests come back before he can start a medication.

Go to a doctor and get tested for hiv first, then make sure if you are positive your virus isn't resistant to Atripla.

This sounds like you decided you were positive and started the atripla on your own.  Am I missing something?

Perhaps I was a bit vague, it being my first post and all. Of course I am positive and have been for the past eight years. The reason for the post was to explain about bad sexual habits and beginning medication for the first time. I know very little about meds and only discovered this site recently. The posts here are a actually what made Mr feel comfortable enough to take my first hive MEd, atripla. Being posotive was not my issue, being resistant is. Sorry about the confusion and thanks for your help.

Your doctor should have administered a test to determine whether or not your virus was resistant to Atripla before he prescribed it.  In fact I'm sure he did, you may want to ask next time you go in.  If he didn't you may want to find a new doctor.

To ease your mind about resistance there are a host of drugs that can deal with hiv even those of us with the most horrific looking resistance profiles have some sort of treatment option usually, so don't let your anxiety run wild with that one.

Hi Gonna, welcome to the forums.

If you do turn out to have resistance issues, it wouldn't necessarily be due to your unprotected sex after you were poz, you could have been infected with a drug-resistant virus to begin with. In fact, that's more likely.

What you're worried about (becoming resistant due to sex you've had since you've been poz) is called reinfection or superinfection. That's super as in superimposed, not super-duper. This seems to be a very rare occurrence and one that only has been seen when someone was very newly infected in the first place, like in the first year or so of infection.

And as has been mentioned, your doctor should have run a resistance test before putting you on meds. If he didn't, it may be time to find a new doctor.
