Thats because you havenīt seen the museum we have here in Toledo (spain) of the Tortures of the Holy Inquisition. There are instruments to pull out womens breasts, a kind of "vibrator" that expands inside the vagina full of sharp cutting edges, a device to open your the cover of your head leaving the brain outside, and many other things you could never imagine....
Thats what the Catholic Church did in Spain in teh middle ages.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Let me only add that at least 27% of AIDS relief work around the world is done by Catholic charities.

Jay
Her finely-touched spirit had still its fine issues, though they were not widely visible. Her full nature, like that river of which Cyrus broke the strength, spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

George Eliot, Middlemarch, final paragraph

Hmm...

Maybe I should clarify my thoughts (before I get into trouble big time...).

There are plenty of good, honest people around the world who call themselves Catholics. However, many of the men in frocks in Vatican City creep me out with their greed and mis-used power. ~shudder~

I am as awed as anyone about the real amount of good things done by the Catholic Church.
It is very difficult for any large bureaucracy in any field not to become corrupt on some level.

This show detailed the great artists and scientists of Florence, their sponsors and protectors, the Medici family, and how the Church went to very extreme measure to censor their works for fear it would lead to their hold on the Masses and source of money and power.

So much history makes it hard not to be cynical of the today's bureaucracy.
The first person we went to when I found out I was + was our priest and he was awesome. We met several times and never ever was there any condemnation or talk of lifestyle. Just comfort, hope, and prayer.
