There was a person in my past life, we called The Happy Hippie.  He could not read or write but faked reading and got away with it for awhile.

One day a group of us were in San Fransisco shopping in Chinatown and Fishermans Wharf, Hippie was driving and I told him to follow the scenic drive (there were signs) and he just didn't get it.  There were about three of us who knew and we kept it a secret.  Every once in awhile if Hippie got a new stereo or anything with instructions, we would read them to him.  Happy Hippie would be about 70 now but he is not the fellow in the First Grader story.  ;D  Have the best day

I have absolutely NO idea what you are talking about.  Hmmm... Should I listen to Patti Lupone in Evita or Madonna?!

Its sweet he is being educated but can you imagine some of the concerns that people may have had having an adult as a student in an elementary school.
Not that I think he personally would do anything harmful.  I wonder where the adult literacy classes where in his area.

I wondered some of those same things in a way...is there an age limit on public education?  Does one automatically have to go to some alternative facility simply by virtue of age or what?  And what if his goal (if he lives that long) is not merely to learn to read but to earn a standard high school diploma?  (Or what if someone, say...50-ish decided to do something like this.)  If a citizen of this country seeks a standard 12 year public education, can he or she be denied for being "too old"?  I've never thought of anything like this.  I wonder.

Heh...sure beats the news a year or so ago about the gay couple who had a "son" in middle school who turned out to be nearly 30.  That one was truly creepy.  Anybody remember that one?

Yikes I don't remember that one.

Schools don't have to allow you in if you are over 18. My son is a shining example for that one. He was a pain in their ass so they said don't come back you aren't welcome. And they where within their right.

Holy Crap!  He doesn't even look 12.  It sure does make you wonder, though.

Can you believe that crap?  If I had a kid attendng school where he was, I would have fallen slap out with that revelation.

The very notion that someone would go to such lengths...impersonating a child in a school under faculty's noses...

Makes the hair on my arms stand up even now.
