I saw a piece on this tonight on one of the local channels. The south is being hit really hard, San Antonio is getting it pretty bad.  A local doctor said it appears to be a strain not included in this years flu shot (which had 3 strains in it).

a 17yo High School boy died in Dallas from the Flu (complications of) 4 days after entering hospital. http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/denton/student-dies-from-flu-complications-185381211.html

How sad...

I also saw this research article that found that pozy's do better with four times the dose of flu vaccines - although if the vaccine doesn't have the strain I would imagine "size (or volume in this case) doesn't count".

What explains the higher levels in the south?  Lack of healthcare, which means many will not get vaccinated?  Thinking the vaccine causes the flu, due to lack of health education?  Thinking living in warmer climates means you don't need to worry as much as those in colder states?

For me it was much earlier...

I'm in Charlotte and had it in mid-late November as did most of my office (through mid December).

It hit me on a Tuesday after work.  I went to bed early and by morning I was unable to function - was couch ridden for about three days.  The next two days I could at least get off the couch but felt physically drained.  The day I came back to work there was an article in the local paper about the South being hit hard and early by the flu.

Mine hit me with chills on Wednesday, December 12th - went to work and was immediately sent home.....
By that evening fever was at 102.8 and held steady there for the next 36 hours..
I was laid out on Thursday - couldn't even get out of bed until 6 in the evening
By Friday - I thought it was clearing but then round 2 hit...
I didn't start getting functional until Sunday (12/16), but held on to the chest cough until just about a week ago...
I still have an intermittant cough - but not nearly as bad as I was in mid-December.

Doc said this year's flu is a tough bug and most strains she is seeing are not part of the vaccine being given... although she still highly recommends being vaccinated.

I have been trying to dodge the flu bullet . Every single person in my family and circle of friends has had the flu ... I'm afraid by writing this I may jinx myself LOL . The flu seems to be a full on pandemic here in Alabama and I still have family that refuse the flu shot . I wish doctors would be more vocal about quashing the ridiculous notion you can get the flu from the flu shot . I know people are still getting the flu that had the shot but still , it drives my batty when people refuse the flu shot .

I had to go to the pharmacy yesterday to update my account and almost ran out of there screaming because of the hacking and coughing and nose blowing that was going on .

I haven't seen Obama's America so I cant comment on that . Lots of people think you can get the flu from the flu shot , I'm sure lots of people all over the world still believe the myth .

Here is another example of why people think they should get a pass on the flu shot .  http://news.yahoo.com/nurses-fired-refusing-flu-shot-224637902--abc-news-health.html

It has been all over our local news for the past few weeks about the extreme number of people becoming severely ill this year.

We had an officer's meeting at the post last night and one idiot chose to set next to me all coughing and hacking.  I excused myself and moved to a different table.  Sorry if I pissed him off, but I personally think it's irresponsible to go out in public spreading this shit.

I don't know how, but I've managed to never catch the flu.

GDP of Pennsylvania and Texas when adjusted for population differences is nearly identical, and quite middling at #24 and #25 among all states. Nice try though, Mr. Fact Challenged. Plus we're at the beginning of the natural gas boom from our Marcellus Shale deposits so our economy will only get stronger, while yours tanks. They're even revitalizing this great nation's oldest oil refinery which is in Philly -- twice the size of Central Park. In turn this will lure new industry!

BOO, BOOOOO  ;)  ....

Florida is on the move, and I see much better things happening here, in the next 5-10 years. It's about time!  8)

Once we get rid of Scott, and make some changes to our legislature, we"ll do a lot better.

Florida is third, in population growth.  We're only behind in population of New York, by 250,000
Onward and upward Florida, for there are better days ahead !
Link :

http://www.baynews9.com/content/news/baynews9/news/article.html/content/news/articles/bn9/2012/12/24/florida_s_population.html

MULBERRY --

The Census Bureau recently released estimates that show Florida's population is growing faster than many predicted.

The estimates show Florida has more than 250,000 new residents, making it third in the nation when it comes to population growth.

Most of that growth isn't coming from childbirth, but rather more people moving here from out of state and outside the country.

William Rodriguez and his family are part of that trend. The family moved to Mulberry from New Jersey a few months ago in search of better opportunities, to be closer to family and to take advantage of the Sunshine State's weather.

"It’s a nice place to be," he said. "I can’t complain. I mean, I lived in New Jersey 41 years so I’m still adjusting to Florida."

Experts say Florida's warm temperatures isn't the only reason people are coming to the state. They said that in many cases, it's taxes.

"It’s a tax climate that’s favorable," said Alexis Muellner, the editor of the Tampa Bay Business Journal. "It’s also really good buys on houses if you have the money and you have the where with all and can put down money on a house."

The census now estimates that Florida is almost as populated as New York, with only a quarter-million less people than the Empire State.

Muellner said the increase is nothing Florida hasn't seen before.

"A few years ago we heard about the thousand people a day coming to Florida," Muellner said "That stopped in fact it reversed with people going to North Carolina and Tennessee. That has come back. It’s swung back."

Here is another example of why people think they should get a pass on the flu shot .  http://news.yahoo.com/nurses-fired-refusing-flu-shot-224637902--abc-news-health.html

From the article:

Quote

But still, Alan Phillips, who represented several nurses at the hospital, says his clients had the right to refuse their flu shots under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits religious discrimination of employees. Religion is legally broad under the First Amendment, so it could include any strongly held belief, he said, adding that the belief flu shots are bad should suffice.

"If your personal beliefs are religious in nature, then they are a protected belief," Phillips said.

So not "believing in" flu shots qualifies as a religious experience now? No wonder things are in such a mess.

Quote

Nurses in particular tend to be the most reluctant to get vaccinated among health care workers, Schaffner said, citing his opinion.

"There seems to be a persistent myth that you can get flu from a flu vaccine among nurses," he said. "They subject themselves to more influenza by not being immunized, and they certainly do not participate in putting patient safety first."

Excuse me for thinking that nurses should have a basic understanding of how vaccines work. Somebody needs to write Vaccines for Dummies so this situation can be rectified.

Hi Ann ... The I don't want a flu shot crowd drives me nuts , its like we are living in the Victorian era again and having to convince people that germs exist because they cant except the science .

You mods deal with it on a daily basis , trying to sell fact and science to the disbelievers .

I think we need a return to a mass eugenics movement of forced sterilization. There are too many crazy people in the world.

Excuse me for thinking that nurses should have a basic understanding of how vaccines work. Somebody

I would never trust a nurse that didn't learn that simple concept in nursing school.  What else did they miss?  Not sure if it's still the case, but we were always required to have the flu shot when working in the healthcare industry.

My partner's sister is a nurse.  They recently began requiring the vaccine, where she works.  She was just telling us how she was outside smoking with some fellow nurses.  She said a few were saying how they didn't trust what was in the vaccine.  She said she laughed at them, saying they were all outside smoking, not really knowing what all is in the cigs.  And, they all take meds not knowing what's in them, with many side-effect commercials that would make people scared.

She was dumbfounded by this fear of the vaccine.  She said they then discussed Mercury.  She told them they just ate more mercury the night they all went for seafood.  Then, they switched to the vaccine causing them to get sick before.  She told them they went to nursing school.  If they really got the flu, they already had it.  She said she's amazed how so many made it through nursing school, because she said so many come off so unintelligent.

My brother refuses to get the vaccine.  He's a chiropractor and has this belief that we need to get sick, in order to have better immune systems.  I've always asked how that's working out for him, as he gets the flu every year.  When I mentioned how the vaccine is not just to protect him, but to protect others, he did agree and said he would get it.  But, I still don't believe he has yet.

The hospital I go to where my HIV clinic is located was the first hospital in the nation to require that all of their employees receive the flu shot, and its mandatory.

As a patient there I quite like that.  I mean if I was there due to a problem with my HIV or even if I was a patient there for something else, eg a heart attack the last thing you would want to get is the flu from one of the employees.

We are offered the flu vaccine, where I work at. I believe the nurses, CNA's and other health care providers usually get it.

We have a lot of elderly, bed ridden residents, where I work  This time of year, a lot of these seniors, are having their family's visit them from everywhere in the country.  December was a terrible month for us, and January ( so far)  isn't looking much better either.  We already have a few residents in quarantine, and we've sent quite a few out to the hospital with " The Flu", and related pneumonia.

And speaking of cigs,... My place of employment just initiated the building and property as a non smoking area, on January 1st The penalty if caught is immediate termination. The company is just not dealing with it any more, it's a zero tolerance policy.  The snack machine emptied out on the first day of the ban.   ::)  I can imagine that all the smokers that I know in the workplace, will be 35 pounds heavier in 6 months.  ::)

As I have said before, I got my first flu shot in 21 years last Oct at the urging of my ID doc. I knew that the flu shot does not give a person the flu. I never got one because I rarely got the flu, was never sick, so it did seem important for me to get it.
I got the flu this Dec. I was down for 2 days. I hadn't had the flu in probably 8 or 9 years, maybe longer. I haven't missed work for being sick like that in years. If I had not gotten the shot, I likely would have been laid out for almost a week. My doc said then that this years flu was a nasty strain. She said the z-pacs didn't seem to be working and she prescribed me tamiflu.

Of course z-paks don't work against the flu. Z-paks are Azithromycin, which is an antibiotic, and antibiotics aren't effective against viruses like the flu virus. Tamiflu is an antiviral. It's a no brainer and I can't believe your doctor said something so stupid.

I got my flu shot in October; I wish it would have worked. My partner and I both got sick right after Christmas on the 28th, I could not get out of bed over that weekend.  Even though we both got our shots early in the season, it appears that it hit me harder than it hit him initially we are a magnetic couple.  I called my doctor on 12/31 and she set me up with a Zpack, the antibiotic helped with the inflammation caused by coughing, sinus infections and started the healing process.  She did tell me that she is also prescribing tamiflu to many that have not had a flu shot.  My sweetie and I were both down a good week with whatever this was (we have been calling it the crud). He ended up having to hit the free clinic finding with a diagnosis of bronchitis and an ear infection, but our symptoms were initially synonymous.  So now we are both better and back to the bump in grind.   My advice is get a hold of your doctor and get yourself hooked up. OneTampa, I got your back buddy, they better redneckonize.  We are part of the US, because we have the biggest hanging appendage. I might have jinxed myself about never having the flu.  Even though I had my yearly shot, I'm coming down with some terrible symptoms.  My chest hurts so bad that I couldn't even have a smoke all day.  Damn coughing and congestion.  Mild headaches for now, and am hoping my shot lessens the severeness of it.

I've quit numerous times through the years (years at a time) but always go back during anxious times.  This being laid up crap is not conducive to quitting.  I started smoking after my diagnosis cause I knew my HIV would kill me quicker than smoking.

I'm not sure about the milder version of a particular flu strain because of having the flu shot.  I'll have to study it cause I don't recall how that works.  If inoculated, there should be no need to produce antibodies to fight it.

No, this is what a Flu shot does. by introducing a "dead" form of the virus it teaches your body to produce antibodies to that particular strain of virus so that if and when that virus enters your body at a later time the antibodies are primed (recognize it) to fight it.

I had my regular Dr. appointment today and he indicated that the flu is taking such a deadly turn because of the high rate of people suffering colds who then get infected with the flu virus.  My chest congestion and other moderate symptoms are simply a common cold.

I simply couldn't imagine also having the flu in addition to fighting this cold that is playing havoc with my breathing.
