Condom slipped
« on: December 09, 2013, 08:22:45 am »
Hi there:

Last night I had sex with an HIV positive guy. He told me he was undetectable and he was on meds (but I met him 20 minutes before having sex so I shouldn't rely on that information). I was the active one (I was sitting and he was riding on me), and at some point I felt how the condom slipped up a lot. I told him to stop, I took out my penis and saw how the condom slipped off completely. I would like to say that I had no risk because I was safe, but I don't know if the condom was protecting me all the time. I got very nervous, and he suggested me to ask for the PEP, just in case, but I don't know if it makes any sense.

I would be grateful to hear from you. :)

Thanks

Avelino, let's evaluate the situation. The condom protected you until whenever it slipped off. The risk to the insertive partner is lower than it is to the receptive partner when there is anal intercourse without a condom on. And we're talking about a single incident of relatively short duration. And the guy maybe on undetectable on meds.

All of those are significant factors in your favor against transmission having occured.

Of course very low level risk is not the same as no risk of course, so ultimately you have to decide if you want to do PEP. If you are going to do it, the sooner the better within 48-72 hours after a risk. It's a 28 day course of treatment. You can get it through your doctor or any emergency room. You can test initially at 6 weeks after the completion of PEP. If your result is negative, (which is what I expect), then it will in all likelihood be conclusively negative at 3 months.

In general in the future make sure you are wearing condoms which fit you snugly and comfortably.

Thanks for the quick response, Andy. You're so kind.
I think I won't do the PEP. I will get tested in 6 weeks, for sure, but I'm pretty sure I was protected all the time, and I don't want to overreact.

Thanks again,
have a nice week

Sorry for starting the conversation again when I already close it myself, but I still have some doubts that I can't get out of my head.

As long as the condom was protecting the head of my penis, there was no risk, right? The condom kind of slipped when I took my penis out, but we didn't have intercouse without the condom, and it didn't break either.
And... the fact that he had bareback sex minutes before doesn't involve my own personal protection, right?

Thank you VERY much

Then by your admission, you never had an exposure.

Ave,

No, you didn't have a risk. Next time, hang on to the condom as you withdraw so you won't scare yourself silly again.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv. Some of the other STIs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!
