Beware the Ides of March...i hate March!
« on: March 11, 2008, 12:09:39 pm »
March 26, 2007 was when i had my diagnosis...yesterday I find out I have anal warts.
Im kinda freakin out here...I know others here have dealt with them so may I ask a few questions?
My GP had me make an appointment with a dermatologist which I will go to on the 25th of this month.  What should I expect...I have read that they may prescribe a cream but most stories I have read here have had outpatient surgery? to have them removed.

It's like a flashback to last year for me...depression, I feel like a walking disease.  Oddly enough, HIV isn't visible these warts are and i think its fucking with my brain more than the HIV did.
If anyone would like to share any experience with me or what I need to inquire with the doc when i see them I would greatly appreciate.  Ya know I am tired of dropping my pants for people I don't want to have sex with.   :-\

Dermatologist?
If you have anal warts then you would need to go to a Colorectal Surgeon.  They usually do outpatient surgery if you have a lot of them. And then a burning annoying cream to keep them at bay for awhile.  After I had surgery for them circa 2001 they never came back. -Mike (the "newt" of all things ass) :)

I feel for you!  March is 'my month', too.  In fact, last week was the 2nd anniversary of my HIV diagnosis.  I was also (mis)diagnosed with syphilis at the same time.  Talk about feeling like an STD Petri dish!   I intentionally didn't start a thread about it all.  I will tell you that, in time, the HIV part kind of blends in to who / what we are... at least it has for me.  I don't have wart experience to share.  I've known people who've had 'em removed and all went well.  It sounds like the were detected / diagnosed early on, which is good.  Look at the bright side:  at least the warts can be removed, unlike HIV!   ;)  Take care, though, and know it will get better.

Hey Bud,

Actually, depending on the extent, a dermatologist may be able to take care of the problem for you without surgery.

I have known several people who saw a dermatologist rather than a surgeon.  Anal warts are not uncommon and can be very uncomfortable.

I would keep the appointment with the dermatologist and then go from there.

HUGS,

Mark

Memories I'd rather forget.

When I had anal warts, the first line of treatment was a dermatologist using a canister of liquid nitrogen to “freeze” them off – very painful and not always effective. After many, many, many treatments mine kept coming back until I had laser surgery to remove them. That was Autumn of 2003. They haven't returned since. Of course, my immunity level is better now than it was then too.

You have my every sympathy, BeefBud!

Hey Bud,

I have always been a top bunk kind of guy and really don't like things in my ass (exceptions have been made  ;D).  During a prostate exam (last year), I asked doctor to stop, he assured me he was a doctor...  I know that but I also know when I deserve a mink or a diamond.  Doctor has also asked me to schedule a colonoscopy and I think about it and then I forget about it because I can't drive myself home and won't ask anyone for the help.  Since my HIV diagnosis was near Christmas and my AIDS diagnosis was 4th of July, I had a long time to avoid those two holidays and every year we have Christmas and Independence Day so, I think it does pass.

I forgot which oscopy it was but once I was knocked out to have tubes stuffed down my nostrils, I think to pump fluid out of my lungs.  As I was going out and being wheeled into the exam room... everyone had these orange masks on, which somehow resembled duck bills.  The last thing I remembered was saying... "Oh fuck, I've been kidnapped by Donald Duck and his nephews"  ;D  Then I woke up and puked on the Nurse, she said it happens all the time and not to be worried about it.  Have the best day

Did they check to see if they were also in your rectum as well?  That's why i think you would need to see an ass specialist.  I got them from barebacking and they had to be lasered off externally and internally. not cute.  just my two cents

It's been stated here before, but health issues continue to pop up, regardless of whether we are HIV+.
I think being HIV+ can make some folks feel down about other health issues, especially if they are STDs.

There are lots of different treatments for anal warts in addition to surgery, such as cryotherapy (freezing)
and acid fulguration.  The last option worked for me, though it took visiting the doc every 3 months for
about 4 years before I was clear of them.

BTW, August is the month where I wised up, finally got tested, and found out I was HIV+.  That was way
back in 1990.

thanks again everyone,
they have not checked further which is something I am requesting...oddly it seems i have to push for further investigation which makes no sense to me.

yes, the HIV does fuck with the thought of any illness that arises, especially STD's.  I just don't get how i could go almost 40 years (and not always safe at that) without a problem and now BAM.  yes, poor pitiful me...I accept my responsibility in all of this.

Hey Beef,

I am coinfected with HPV which causes warts and unfortunately can also cause cancer...I would ask to see an "Anal Dysplasia" specialist or have your doctor have a pap done to make sure you don't have any warts or "lesions" in your rectum.
I had abnormal growth cells and had it removed surgicaly (outpatient) back in December...although I hope I never have to go through this again,  I am glad I had this done.

Hello again and thank you all for your input/support and well wishes.
A bit of follow up.

Went to the dermatologist yesterday, extremely nervous....ya know embarassing to an extent but im losing any inhibitions I ever had with each passing day.  The first nurse (female) took my info and I filled her in, she was incredibly cool and just asked me to undress waist down and cover with the blanket (which should read the over sized papertowel)
The Derm comes in, reads over the chart, sees my embarassment and puts her hand on my shoulder to assure me, its not the first time we have seen this and I am sure you won't be the last but lets get you taken care of.
She suggests first the anuscopy which they don't do (thank you to everyone here for recommending it as I see my ID on Friday and it will be insisted upon) She then described 3 different options to take to remove the ones external very thoroughly,  we opted for the freezing method.
VERY cold, a bit of  stinging and me with no poppers...well hell!!!!  ;)   Took all of 5 minutes and then a brief exit talk that it will most likely have to be repeated once more if not twice and set up a follow up appointment.
End of story.

Thank you everyone for telling me what you know and to have a course of action to take...it really helps!

Hang in there Bud.. these buggers are persistent and you may have to go back several times before they are under control..... I see the Derm Dr  about every 4 months to check..about once in four times he will find a spot or two and we treat immediately....very persistent buggers......   I am sure they told you there is no " cure"  just be very aware that they can come back at any time.  and dont be embarrassed...this is how Derm Drs  make a living..

My own GP just freezes external ones off in his office.  I've had about four rounds frozen off in about 4 years.  It hurts like hell afterwards (sorry).

I still haven't had the results back from the anal dysplasia clinic a moth ago.  There were 4 small ones inside, which they will monitor as they're too small to remove. :-[

Agreed.

And once freezing the fuckers didn't work I had them sliced out, by the same dermatologist... sutures and all.

This was 10 years ago and mine never returned.
