Title: Thursday Night Options
Post by: AMG Coordinator on June 03, 2007, 03:40:40 pm
Hey AMG Attendees!

Most of us are arriving on Thursday.  Since this is OUR gathering I'd like your input for a Thursday night event.

The past two years has consisted of the Pub Crawl, which to my understanding, was simply a small group informally getting togethor at one local watering hole.  Do we continue with this tradition, mix it up a bit, or leave this evening as open or "on your own"?

If we should decide to crash one of the local bars then what type of environment/atmosphere would you all prefer?  Large, intimate, gay, straight, gay friendly, etc.

Or do we mix it up a bit and go see a show?  One that I came across while surfing was Beach Blanket Babylon.  "It is a zany musical spoof of pop culture with extravagant costumes and outrageously huge hats. The Show's immediate popularity forced it to move to larger quarters at Club Fugazi, a North Beach landmark, where it eventually found a permanent home."  http://www.beachblanketbabylon.com/ (http://www.beachblanketbabylon.com/)

Perhaps a casual dinner.  Home Restaurant is willing to host our group for dinner.  Private room with fireplace, private bar, aprox $30 pp for a 3 course meal.  http://www.home-sf.com/ (http://www.home-sf.com/)

This is your gathering and only we can make it happen!  Let me know what's on your mind.  Less than 4 months to go!!

Dennis

P.S.  An updated events thread will be posted later this evening.

Far be it for me to turn down a reason for a drink... I would like Pub Crawl, maybe at 13th and Castro?  Or is it 18th and Castro?  Have the best day

Hi Michael,

What's the name of the establishment.  I did a quick google search and only found a Starbucks on the corner of 18th and Castro.

18th and Castro?

X marks the spot.

The Holy corner of San Francisco's famed Castro.  One one corner is Wells FArgo Bank.  Kiddy corner is Walgreens.  Those 2 never change. On the 3rd corner is a bar.  Last I knew it was called 'Harvey's' (?) after Harvey Milk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_MilkH), San Francisco's first openly gay supervisor.  On the 4th corner is a card shop, I believe.  (It's been 2 or 3 years since I"ve been to the Castro.)  Within a couple of blocks of that intersection there are about 10 bars, minimum.

Now I would love Beach Blanket Babylon. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beach_Blanket_Babylon)  It's classic SF theatre that everyone would love.  I guarantee it.  You would not be disappointed.

Are the bars on Castro open to mixed company.

Oh yeah. Not a problem.  SF is very cosmopolitan, in its  own erudite way.  40 years ago the Castro is a very working glass neighborhood.  The gays started moving in and gentrified it.  OVer the last 10 years, it's been going through another stage of gentrification.  Only this time young urban professionals of all persuasions are moving in.   What do they call them?  Metrosexuals?  Something like that.  Anyway.  Not to worry.  I think everyone should feel comfortable.

I would love to see Beach Blanket Babylon.

I mean, if it made "Tales of the City," how far wrong could it be?

HUGS,

Mark

I have seen Beach Blanket Babylon several years ago when I was visiting a close friend in SF. It's very entertaining and campy.
I want to see it again! Prices are a little lower on weekdays than weekends so Thursday may be the ideal good target night.

Mike

P.S. Oh yeah, don't forget that smoking is not allowed in San Francisco bars. Often, there are patios available for the indulgence. Some, but not all bars offer patios. Otherwise, you'd just have to step out to the front sidewalk for a smoke.

Dennis: As far I can remember, I believe I have seen at least a female or two in most of the bars in Castro area that I visited--if that is what you mean by "mixed". Also, I believe there is a dyke bar somewhere in that area that is infamous for it's fist-fights. <chuckle>

Hi Dennis,

I don't know the name of the bar... It was pointed out to me by my straight friend  as the gayest corner in the world.  We were going to stop for an adult beverage but there was no parking within reasonable walking distance.  I believe Robert used to live on Stanyan and that is close so maybe he knows.   Have the best day

Isn't Bad Lands on the corner of 18th and Castro?

BTW, regarding Beach Blanket Babylon, the balcony seats in Club Fugazi offer a nice clear and close enough view of the stage. It's a nice spot to be for the finale.  ;)

Do you have any suggestions Dan.  I am looking for feedback as well as suggestions.  As I mentioned.  This is YOUR gathering and I can't make it happen unless I know what the majority would like.

No thanks, I don't "do" gay bars anymore. Even if they are in San Francisco.

Rod....I think Badlands is a storefront or two further up on 18th.  I think.  I'm not sure..  As far as I know, it's still there.

The bar on the corner was always changing owners.  It must be a pricey piece of property.

Hell, provided we are over the jet lag..and we will, both my partner and I are ready for a night of fun!  Bars, theater or whatever - just a good time.

Life is short so live it!

I'm with you Rog.  With the majority of people arriving on Thursday I'm sure most will be jet lagged.  But speaking for myself, I can't imagine sitting in my hotel room the first night of the amazing city.

From what I understand in the past, group dinners have been almost impossible.  This year we have an opportunity to have a group dinner which could occur late on Thursday; I'm thinking around 7 or 8 after most have arrived.

If I get enought interest I can arrange someting at Home Restaraunt which is close to the Castro district for those that may want to hit the scene afterwards while those that want get a good nights rest for Fridays visit to the AIDS Memorial Gardens can do so.

Peace,
Dennis

I'm up for enjoying the city all I can while I'm there.  I figure I can catch up on my rest after the event.  I've never  been to the Castro area so that is one aspect that I hope to get to do in addition to everything else.  A group dinner on Thursday sounds like it has some potential for those that might be interested.

Dennis, We like the idea of Home Restaurant.  And BB Babylon sounds like a lot of fun, too.

To date there hasn't been a whole lot of response to a Thursday night "planned" group event;  Or at least enough response to one of the suggestions proposed to warrant arranging a group with any of the establishments listed.  BB Bablyon requires at least 20 persons for a group and I would need confirmation from at least 25 people to reserve the private room at Home Restaraunt.  A few have expressed interest in partying in the Castro.

To date people seem pretty content in leaving Thursday night open to spend at their leaisure.  Only 10 out 40 something attendees have expressed interest.  Unless this thread picks up in the next week or so I'm prepared to leave Thursday night open.

Well basically I want to have the following options (in order of preference):

1) awesome sex
2) ok sex
3) great meal
4) fun being drunk
5) watch PBS

I think most people will be tired on thursday, coming from out of state, there are few people from cali that are on the same time zone.. so let's make it slow, a drink at a nice bar, then a cool dinner. I don't think we should plan for a group dinner that night and reserve a restaurant for 20+ people, but rather expect a meet at a bar, then have people go to different places to eat?

Thursday night = open. Some will want to hit the Castro area, others will gravitate towards a nice restaurant, while others will take in some other form(s) of entertainment. However, I surmise few will stay in their hotel room. Despite the flight time, when in San Francisco--just something about the city that's magic.
xxx,
Mike

P.S. Sex. Good grief! You'd think people never got enough of it!
