Hardcore athletics - pro or con?
« on: August 10, 2006, 09:24:03 pm »
I am a marathoner, and while my infectious disease doctor said that it is "okay" to continue training and running to stay in shape (and she actually said to help me sleep better) she didn't seem overly pro or con on the subject. Am I 1) doing something GOOD that will prolong my health and help my condition in the long-term or 2) putting too much strain on my system and/or risking injuries that could become OIs? Anyone else out there still going hardcore?

Note: I just read about a 7 day bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles (The Ride for Life) that I'm considering doing - sounds awesome.

I can't see this is here or there HIV-wise. Do it

Cardiovascular heath is important long-term with HIV. The fitter the better.

My doctor told me to do the "exact" same things I was doing before I got diagnosed (except to practice safer sex, obviously), and that includes my heavy workouts, both free weights and cardio. I haven't changed a thing as these things reduce my stress and I love them. (I am not on any medication, so perhaps that helps.)

sounds groovy. an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. aids wasting is one area i hope you'll never have to face. just curious, i assume that burns lots of calories, true? false? when did you start? recently? years ago? are you happy with your current weight? that's all for now. i do hope lydgate (jay) chimes in on this thread because he knows a thing or two about athletic issues

ciao

Exercise is good, but don't over do it matey.

As a marathoner, I'm sure you are already fit and know your own body better than anyone else. I am also sure you would be aware of elite athletes who from training too hard stress their immune systems and end up sick. I'm not saying don't do it, but maybe listen a little more closely to your body for any signs of fatigue etc.

The bike rdie sounds like fun though.
