Does it ever better?
« on: June 30, 2012, 07:39:10 pm »
Hello All,

I was diagnosed 3mths ago and initially was pretty good but it seems to have hit me in the past week or two. I'm extremely fortunate to have amazingly supportive family and friends. I even have a great doc who I trust, who I feel comfortable with and safe in his hands.

But I would really like this virus to fuck off!!!

I always practiced safe sex and I have ended up with HIV, even when I did the right thing. I don't know what I missed.

I NEVER thought I would be in this situation. So much to consider, physical and mental health, disclosure, meds, I can travel here but not there...the list goes on.

Apologises for my rant but thank you for listening.

Cheers  :) :)

Hi Vetton and welcome to the forums .

The answer to your question is yes , it does get better . Three months may seem like a long time but I imagine you are going through a whole range of emotions right now .

It sounds like you are doing the right things by finding a doctor you trust and are comfortable with . Please remember there are no rules about how you should feel or how long you should take to except living with HIV . Give yourself time and I promise it will get better .

It gets better.

Where can't you travel? And were you ever even planning on going to one of those countries?

There are some people who never can identify the risk that led to HIV. Its frustrating but thats the way the cookie crumbles. Its not important in the long run.

Hi Vetton,

You may not feel like it right now, but it WILL get better..It took me 6 months to finally accept what had happened to me, and to be honest, I have no idea how I picked up HIV..I realized after a while that it does no good to thrive on what's already done. I still haven't told any family about my diagnosis, but I still live the same life I always have..Going out with friends, working, jogging, planning vacations etc. Only thing that has changed is the doc appointment every few months and the pill each night at bedtime..It's really good that you at least know and are taking care of it :)

Hi Vetton

Tested poz in 2007. Taking meds, working out, looking great.

Sure, I'd love to not have this virus in me and this label, but as they say, HIV infection is now a chronic condition that can be easily treated and handled.

The worst part is the stygma, but it is up to you to accept what happened to you and make the best of your life AND, count your blessings. As terrible as it is sounds, the truth is that there are many worse medical conditions today then turning HIV pozitive.

Take time to deal with it and eventually, this will just be a small part of your life.

Hi Vetton -

I can relate to the struggles you described - when I first got my diagnosis I was at the outset quite philosophical - the 'ah, so this is my new adventure' sort of thing - but every once in a while it would really rattle me. And 13 years later, it still sometimes rattles me. But most of the time, it doesn't really even make onto my radar.
I am optimistic that I will remain healthy (perhaps even healthier than if I hadn't received the diagnosis), and that I will live and love for a long time yet (one of my teachers in acupuncture college said, when I told her I'd found out I was HIV+, "You'll outlive us all" - she was also a nurse, and her voice of encouragement meant a lot to me).
When I have a down day, I just push on through, as I used to do before HIV was an issue. My guess is, you'll find strategies to do the same. After a time, you'll find the HIV-related mental burden will lessen.
And, hey, we can still hope for a cure!
03/15/1999 - dx as HIV+
07/30/2003 - started HAART (Sustiva + Epzicom)
long history, not very interesting...
07/10/12 - started Atripla

Hi agulha, welcome to the forums.

I deleted your very first post - the one you left in the Am I Infected forum. Please read that forum's Welcome Thread and abide by the rules governing that particular forum.

Some of the other forums also have Welcome Threads sticked at the top of their index pages, so please read them when they appear. They have important information in them that you need to know before posting (or not posting, as the case may be).

Thank you for your cooperation on this score.

And again, welcome to the forums. Sorry I had to delete your first post, but that's the way of it sometimes. :)
