Any recommendation for Doctors in NYC
« on: July 26, 2009, 01:09:45 pm »
Hello All,

Currently, I am seeing a ID doctor in Queens, but I have drive to that place. He is very far and often I have to take time-off from work, which is very difficult. I am comfortable talking to him, but its just the distance which will be even a bigger problem in winters.
I did some search on the forums and apparently David Perlman in Manhattan accepts my insurance (BCBS).
Does anyone has any other recommendation for doctors in NY (around city or LIC/Elmhurst area in Queens)?

Also, do you need some kind of permission from your present doctor to change? During my last visit when I got the news, I asked him to recommend a doctor near the city, but by that time he took more blood samples already, and said he will have office in Astoria soon. Do ID doctors know each other? (I don't want them to take it personal and hate me for changing doctors).

Thanks all in advance.

Warm Regards,
H

nycpoz, I am in NYC and can recommend two ID specialists.  I will email you.  Also, I don't think you need permission to switch doctors.  I switched primary care physician from a GP to my current ID doctor and my GP was fine with it.  It may even be a relief to your doctor if they already have too many patients.

Thanks a lot GNYC. You mean you will PM me the doctors? .. Can we email other members? I am asking just for information, if there is a functionality of this nature? Also, can we chat with other members?

Kind regards,
H

There are so many HIV specialists in NYC I'm sure you'll get good recommendations. I can highly recommend two doctors, both are excellent, work out of the same practice: Dr. Charles Paolino and Dr. John Dellosso. They have both been treating HIV for a very long time, 1980s. The office is on 14th St., W of 8th Ave.

You can also check the website for the American Academy of HIV Medicine (aahivm.org) and do a search for doctors by location using zip codes.

Thanks inchingblue and gnyc, but only doctor that my insurance covers is Charles Paolino. And I was checking his information on my insurance website and he is not listed as Infectious Disease specialist. I checked his reviews (on google) and looks like he is always over-booked.

Other option I have is David Perlman (found his name on the forums) and he accepts my insurance. Does anyone has any experience with this guy?

Thanks a lot again gnyc and inchingblue for the advise. It really helps.

Kind regards,
H

Paolino has been treating HIV at least since the early 90s, maybe even the late 80s. He's very knowledgeable, as much as any ID specialist, he has a very large HIV practice. He's a member and has been certified by the AAHIVM. I'm not in NYC anymore but when I was seeing him I never had a problem getting an appt. and he took the time to discuss things with me, I never felt rushed or shortchanged in any way.

I'm not saying you should go to him, but just want to make sure you know that. The man knows what he's doing, he's an excellent doctor.

There are threads on the forum where others have asked for doctor recommendations in the past. If you do a search you can find some of them, which might help.

I just did one using NYC DOCTOR and a few came up.

Thanks inchingblue. I did some search already, and I found few names on the forums. Some of them are either too busy or are not covered by my insurance. I saw one name Jeff Greene, and called him today for appointment and earliest I could get was 13th august. The guy who answered the phone said that he is really busy doctor. So I dont know if I should go to him or not. He is very well regarded person when it comes to hiv though.

I also looked up for Charles Paolino on web, and he has been on practice only since 2000 and graduated in 1996. The guy you mentioned has been treating pozs since 80's. I am wondering if we are talking about the same guy.
The guy I am going to right now has a really bad rating, so I am gonna definitely see another doctor. If anyone has any other recommendation please please let me know. I just want to make sure i goto the right guy.

Best regards,
H

Sorry that you have to look for  an hiv docto. I have searched and most of the doctors that have been recommended here in the forums are either too busy or are not covered by my insurance. I have appointment with dr jeff greene on 13th aug, and apparently he is a very busy doctor. Another stephen dillion is not even seeing patients until october. I am really confused myself.
You can goto aahivm.org and find the doctor, but I really want some one tell me about the doctor before I pursue appointment with them.

I'll keep you posted and please do the same.

Best regards,
H

Hey

Do yourself a big favor and find a GP who also specializes in ID medicine.  One doc for all your issues - less hassle.  There are a lot in NYC who fall into this category, especially in Chelsea, Grammercy, and West Village.   I can PM you with further info if interested.
