i'm skeered... my big toe is in need or surgery

i have to get my toe worked on this tuesday. i have an ingrown toenail. im scared shitless and just want to skip the surgery and move forward with the antibiotics.

any words of wisdom or practical advice? my dr wants to do this as an outpatient procedure and will not give me any pain killers.

Yikes, while Ive never had this surgery It's the one I fear the most. Id seriosuly rather have my heart opened up than a toenail dug out of my foot (I can be irational at times, but nevertheless thats how I feel). However Ive known people who've had it and they say it is no big deal.

Good luck and keep us posted, im looking at my toenail now tryting to determine if this surgery may be in my future.

a couple of Lidocaine shots with a thin needle and numb is numb; you won't feel a thing after that. Ask the doc. to take away the edges of the nailroot as well. You'll have a narrower nail that doesn't ever grow in again. .

A wedge resection really isn't a big deal. Bit gory, but you'll be a better fella for it.

I've never had an ingrown nail.  When I was 17, I was working in a lumber yard, and rolled a 600 pound cart over my right foot ( all the toes), And the cart,  had hard rubber wheels, there was no give, and I wasn't wearing steel toe shoes at that time. I did some great dance moves.

Needless to say, When I got to the emergency room, they removed my shoe and sock, and parts of the toenails were in the socks.  I had to have several of the numbing injections given on most of the toes, so the remaining busted nails , could be removed.

Now I know this sounds    , once that first shot is given , your going to do fine, and it will be over with before you know it.

Be thankful you didn't roll a 600 pound cart over your toes !!     You need to get this done, so you don't have to worry about the risk from infection . You'll do fine.

Get it done, if you don't it will just keep getting worse and you will always have trouble with it.

My friend had this done a couple of weeks ago and he said he should have had done it sooner..Matty is right (would he lie to you)..having in-grown toe surgery is no big deal.

I get in-grown toenails all the time.  When I was 16, they cut half my big toenail off.  About two years ago, I was wearing water shoes or whatever they are called while jet skiing.  I hit my big toe on concrete and the whole nail eventually fell off.  It grew back.

I'm actually dealing with 2 right now on both big toes.  One got infected.  When I pressed on it, all this puss came out.  Sorry for being so gross, but nothing compares to that pic.  Of course with HIV, I wonder whether that infected toe was due to HIV.  I'm sure it would have happened regardless.  I put peroxide on it a few times a day and the infection went away.  I'm getting up the nerve to cut them out myself--actually dig them out.  Again with the HIV, I wonder whether I need to be more careful doing that.  I've dug them out for years now and never worried.  I guess I'll make sure everything is sterile with alcohol.

It sounds like you've got a really bad one to be going to the doc.  I remember seeing them getting ready to poke that huge needle between my toes and I almost passed out.  It wasn't so bad.  I think they say to see a doc if you start noticing redness traveling up your toe.  They hurt so bad when someone steps on your toe or you hit it on something.

after your story sir it's not that bad. i guess i will try the peroxide. for some odd fucked up reason i'm adverse to taking antibiotics but have no problem putting a slew of random mind altering substances into my body.

i think my toenail is fucked up and has been for a while. i have never been able to separate the area where the toenail touches the skin. last time i was cutting the fucker i cut the area where the skin and toenail met trying to get what i thought was more nail. a few days later clear fluid and pain (guess that was the infection). a few more days blood (not a lot and not oozing, just there).

i kinda want to just get rid of the infection and let things go back to normal down there, i think the infection is causing more pain than the ingrown toenail. dunno, shits always been jacked down there but that's normal. altering it bothers me if the shits always been that way. we'll see.

I have had trouble w/toenail fungus on my two big toes from years stomping about the bathhouse... lol.  Now that I've been reformed by that angel HIV and learned the virtues of chastity, one of them righted itself after a few years.  Actually that's somewhat amazing since most HIV negs can't even accomplish that without lamisil or something like that.  However, I still have a problem w/the other one.  The fungus causes the toenail to thicken in the middle causing it to ingrow on one side.  I left it get too far once and had to operate myself.  I bought a pair of toenail nippers and some spray antibacterials.   A toenail nipper looks something like a miniature tinsnip. 
It hurt and bled like hell, but I hacked the sucker out (completely cut one entire side of the toenail out, all the way from top to bottom) and limped about for three days.  I still have to pry out the corner every now and then, but I stay on top of it.  I found the a metal nail file works well.  I just file the thick toenail flat to keep it from curving down on the ends.

thanks mitch. after getting over it (thank you mtd, i will never fear anything you post again  ) and facing my demons i started really looking into it. this was bolstered by the info you wonderful people gave me. i've decided to fuck off my dr's visit and monitor the fucker from home. i'll be getting some peroxide today and will clean and apply the solution to the affected area.

my toe feels a lot better after giving it some tlc last night. i washed it thoroughly with warm water. then i cut away some of the skin (not much, not much at all...as in no bleeding). i discovered the toenail was indeed coming out clean and not growing into the side skin. the infection came from me cutting the fucker wrong 2 weeks ago. (did the floss trick and the edge of the toenail cleared the skin).

i applied an antibiotic ointment after cleaning. when i woke up this morning things looked a lot better and the pain and redness were reduced. i will apply the ointment again soon and will start the hydrogen peroxide after i return from the store.

if things go down hill i will see my dr and begin the antibiotics. i am a bit of a worrywort but i think ill get through this just fine, regardless of which way the infection goes.

He was shot up in 77, but was diagnosed that year as well.  Unfortunately, unlike you he didnt want to have the toe amputated.  Stuff went rampant and spread to his brain and lungs, killing him in 81.  LOL, just messing with you though.  It had nothing to do with a hang nail.  It was more along the lines of skin cancer of the toe and not getting it properly treated.

Next, Grasshopper was spot on and if it was enough to make you go to the doctor to begin with, you need to get it done. It's no big deal...in fact, I had the procedure done last Monday, on Frankenfoot. It's the second one; both have been on the big toe but on opposite sides of the nail. My doc freezes the shit out of my toe with ethyl chloride (I asked for a rag but he's too young to know why I'm asking) and then he takes his time slowly working in the needle and injecting the anesthetic--like a good dentist would do. You'll have to take the bandage off the next morning and soak your foot in a bucket of epsom salt water (get a big back at the drugstore) and then wrap a wide cloth bandaid around it. You do this for 10 days to two weeks, changing the bandaid after you shower or swim (take it off before a shower at home but leave it on to swim or shower in public) and that's it. You see him once more, he says looks good, and done.

And it doesn't hurt enough to need anything more that aceta or ibu, but feel free to take anything stonger, just to be proactive. Other than possibly a little, tiny stinging sensation when he's numbing up your foot, it's just not going to hurt.
