A Cavalcade of Horror Films
« on: October 14, 2010, 07:37:46 pm »
Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen memorable horror films. List the first fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes.  With Halloween coming upon us I thought this would be fun.

Phantasm

Let the Right One In

Night of the Living Dead

Jacob's Ladder

REC 2

Bram Stroker's Dracula

Suspiria

Burnt Offerings

Carrie

The Shining

The Exorcist

28 Days Later

Rosemary's Baby

Planet Terror

Evil Dead 2

 Mentionables

The Sentinel

An American Werewolf in London

Cemetary Man

Motel Hell

I have a story for everyone of these films, but the most important was that An American Werewolf in London christened our family's very first VCR.  Followed up with a double of Blood  Beach and Aliens.

sadly paranormal activity and blair witch are only good for the first viewing because their kick comes from those final scenes. But I was still on edge throughout both waiting for something to happen.

I listed Alien even though it's scifi cause that original face hugger scence is the scariest bit ever in a movie.

yes, 30 days is good, but I always cry at the end when Josh Hartnett flakes away; but I get teary-eyed when Kirsten Dunst goes ashes-to-ashes in Interview with a Vampire. (oh! there's another one)

additions to my list:
Interview with a Vampire
Phantoms (the ben affleck movie adaptation of a Dean Koontz novel)
leatherman (aka Michael)

We were standing all alone
You were leaning in to speak to me
Acting like a mover shaker
Dancing to Madonna then you kissed me
And I think about it all the time

Camms, I just noticed that you too had 'Let the Right One In' on your list.  Is that a beauty of a film or what?  I can't believe I forgot to mention '28 Days Later'; that's one of my favorite films, scary or not.  Its sequel was OK, but not as great.

Rev- Lair of the White Worm, Ken Russel.....I saw it years ago, good flick.  It was during my KR phase. I completely forgot about his other, The Devils.

Sinner- The collector is definitely an honorable mention.

It's beautifully dark, with visual flair.  Noticed you had the Lost Highway.  I'm a huge David Lynch fan.  I think Blue Velvet is one of my top 30 favorite films, but that's another thread, another time.

30 Days of Night is some scary premium stuff.  :o
The sequel, 30 Days Of Night: Dark Days, is out on DVD.
Still prefer the 1st - more intense horror at your throat. ;)

I am so glad someone besides me likes Nosferatu. I watch it every year! I like the shorter version better than the restored 90 minute version, though.

It would be a great film to watch with your own soundtrack blasting in headphones, sitting alone in a room with a couple of flickering candles, stoned out of your gourd. I mean, if anybody actually did that sort of thing.

As a theme, I'll go with Aztecan's list. Some offer real creepiness, still!  Others just for the camp. They all work well playing on an old black and white TV in the corner of a loud Halloween party.

That is a great list!!  It made me remember being a kid, sitting on the couch on Sunday mornings in my pajamas watching Creature Feature.  Nosferatu with Max Scheck's iconic shot below:

and I found the full movie on youtube!  Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcyzubFvBsA

I love this comment below the clip:

It would seem that in the space of 88 years vampires have gone from being really fucking awesome into being pathetic pieces of shit like Edward Cullen

My list:

The Exorcist

The Evil Dead

Amityville Horror

The Shining

The Ring

Hellraiser (first one)

Nightmare on Elm Street (first one)

Halloween

Motel Hell

Terror Train

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Jaws

Silence of the Lambs

28 Days Later

Frosty the Snowman Saves Christmas (narrated by the sinister Berl Ives)

Edward Cullen is not a vampire.  He's a pasty, whiney, shadow of the real vamps of the early film era.  It seems he would be better off antiquing, rather than involved in a  racial war of ghouls.

Not so far off, but David Bowie in, The Hunger, is just ....cooler than Cullen!

These bring back some great memories with my dad.
The wolfman with Lon Chaney, and the original  blob are indeed classics.  Oh and The Mummy with Boris Karloff had me scared for at least a month.  I remember The blob and Godizilla playing quite frequently on ABC's Creature Double Feature

I like all the ones you guys listed but must say my favorite of late is "The Collector".  This one has sequels written all over it.

I also liked "let the right one in".  Did anyone see the remake that just came out "Let me in"?   I hadn't heard much about it.

There was one, I saw in the early 1970's and I don't remember the name.  Does this sound familiar to anyone?  Filmed in the La Mancha region of Spain, the film opens with a beautiful Spanish woman discovering her step-son Damian has stolen 100 pesetas, she made it sound like 1000 USD instead of the 2 USD at the exchange rate of the day, so the kid has also drilled small peep holes over the parents bed.  So the child, Damian is evil and does cruel things throughout the film.  In the final scene, the step mother and child are at a park in Madrid, the step mother throws a ball for the boy to catch and he gets creamed by a car.

Ordinarily, this movie would have not interested me but the night after I saw this film, our car was towed and impounded.  The taxi driver took us through the same park on the way to the impound lot.   ;D  Have the best day

You have to love a film that's narrated by a dead man.  Sunset is truly a classic.
