Just tested POS in June w/ full blown aids
« on: October 02, 2012, 12:10:56 pm »
I had been sick since January but because my doc didn't ever expect HIV I went Through multiple docs, and MRI's etc.  I basically fell apart in May and was put in the hospital.  I don't know for sure but think they found out then I was Pos but I went on the respirator on and off for another 4wks.  I lost 60lbs and was sent to Indianapolis a bigger hospital.  The family was told I wasn't likely to make it.
I got my bearings back to me end of June or July still fuzzy on detail.  The HIV doc came in and gave me the news.  I wasn't blown away, I new with my prior history that it had just caught up with me.  The only thing I find odd is they told me I was pos for at least 4yrs.  That would've been the last time I tested on my own.  How can they put a time frame on such a thing.  My #'s going in was really low  3% and my viral load was 650,000 the doc said.  I am still learning but know that wasn't good.  goes back to death bed.
So they sent me to rehab cause I lost all muscle and couldn't even stand at end of June?  They sent me with cdiff that I had gotten in the hospital 2 wks prior.  I was in isolation at rehab for 90% of my stay.  It took 2 bouts of meds to cure the cdiff.   I told my roommate to either come and get me or I was walking home.  So I made it home holiday weekend.  I am pretty healthy I gained a lot of my wgt back.  Mentally I find it challenging because the two people that know my status are in denial of me beyond taking meds.    This is to long I am sorry.

Welcome to the forums Jimalee . I'm sorry you have had such a rough go of it but it sounds like you are responding well to the meds and on the mend .

You will find the forum a great source of support and information . I'm not the best at answering some of the questions you asked in your first post but I wanted to welcome you . In the mean time you can check out the lessions section at the top of the page , there is info there on the life cycle of HIV and many other topics you might want to check out .

Your post is hardly too long, considering the dramatic and epic events of the past year!  Cut yourself some slack.

Its not so important when your infection date was.  I mean, you know already the last time you tested negative, and now you know where you are in the infection.  People can progress in a few short years, or much longer. It's a crap shoot.  The present and the future is what's important.

I am sorry you had to go through all this.

I am sorry that you don't have the support you need yet.  What's the plan there?  You have a therapist, social worker, a place or person to help you plug into supportive networks?

I don't really get what you mean about your 2 people who know, who are in denial???

Believe it or not, my brother and I married sisters.  I divorced and came out after 6yrs.  Oddly enough my best friend is my ex wife.  She stayed with me 3 wks in the hosp when they said I wasn't going to make it.  So I told her my HIV status and she and the kids all went and tested neg.  Her sister, my sis n law was told by her cause during all this she to came and went way out of her way for me.  We live 2hrs from the hosp I was in.
I mention to my ex I wanted to join a HIV support group and she was like "do you really think you need that?" so I dropped the subject.
I just got a call an hour ago that I am no longer eligible for a surgery to remove a tumor.  I ask temp or perm decision they said perm.  So I am learning HIV can have major impact when least expected.

What country are you in, please?
Because you have HIV, you are not forbidden from certain medical treatments?
A couple of months ago a member here from Turkey explained that he couldn't get surgery anymore because of HIV.  What an awful situation.

So your ex and your ex-sister in law, they know, but you think from now going forward they don't want to talk about it anymore?  And, or, they want you to keep a low profile as HIV+ and don't want you to have public support.  Is it something about not wanting "the family" to be tarnished with the stigma of HIV/AiDS?

Hi Jimalee,

Hang in there. It will get better, stick with the medications.

And get assertive (not aggressive) with your doctors, always ask lots of questions.
If you can find a support group go for it, they can be amazingly good.

Let us all know how you are progressing.

Big Hugs
