Copay assistance program + Your own insurance
« on: June 07, 2011, 03:41:15 pm »
My insurance requires me to fill my prescriptions via their mail order system in 90-day increments.

I'm told that these copay assistance programs were designed exclusively for a local pharmacy and therefore not accepted for my situation.

Does this sound right to you?
04/19/11 - Diagnosed positive
04/29/11 - CD4 188 @ 12.5% / VL 18k
05/03/11 - CD4 171 @ unk% / VL 7k
06/04/11 - Start Truvada/Isentress
07/11/11 - CD4 not tested / VL UD
09/07/11 - CD4 252 @ unk% / VL UD

Nope.  I use a mail order pharmacy and I have copay assistance bringing my cost to 0 monthly.  Co pay assistance is just a card you take to the pharmacy, you can give your pharmacy the information over the phone and they'll handle it for you.

Doesn't sound right at all, but then again I also had troubles getting everything going initially.

I am on Atripla's copay assistance. My insurance is through United Health, and they eventually refered me to Prescription Solutions (a mail order pharm) who have been THE BEST to deal with.

Unfortunately with my work, I don't have a choice - I have to use CVS/Caremark.  To add insult to injury, they allow me to use a local pharmacy, but will only cover 21-days worth at a time.

I have had to use this method a few times when I was in a bind and couldn't wait for my meds through the mail; any pharmacist I deal with is always amazed at how "sucky" and strange that my insurance only covers 21-days worth at a time.

I understand the economical side ordering via mail - and actually it works out to be pretty nice to order in 90-day increments and not have to worry about it ordering more for 3 months.

I imagine not everyone wants to go that route and for my insurance to encumber someone's ability to access meds vital to one's survival is beyond me.

I digress.

I spoke to two reps at Caremark today (hung up on one and called right back hoping to get someone else).  Neither of them seemed knowledgeable.  When they asked who the manufacturer for Isentress was, I gave them an appropriate response - they were like, "so do you spell that M-A-R-K"?  OH lawd!  These are people you expect to know who Merck is.
