Stem Cell technological revolution

Internationally recognised stem cell scientist, Associate ProfessorIgor Slukvin, University of Wisconsin – Madison, is visiting Australia as the key-note speaker at a Stem Cell Meeting and Workshop in Sydney next week.

He will be presenting a revolutionary stem cell technology to the Australian bioindustry and revealing how it is likely to shake up the therapeutic potential of stem cells and regenerative medicine.

CymerusTM, as the stem cell platform technology is called, has the potential to create BILLIONS of human stem cells from a SINGLE donor stem cell and may be extremely important in the therapeutic application of stem cells in a range of diseases.  Professor Slukvin is one of the inventors of the Cymerus™ technology.

Professor Slukvin made the invention in the Wisconsin laboratory which is well-known for being the home of the world’s first isolation of the embryonic stem (ES) cell by Professor James Thomson in 1998.

This technology can revolutionize gen therapy engrafment. As many of you know, Sangamo/CoH/Calimmune after aphoresis, apply their technology to the billions of cells they collected from the body with % of engrafted cells being somewhat on the low end. With this technology, the billions of cells introduced back into the body can be 100% modified.

I guess they would insolate a single cell and pour the product (zinc finger RNAi, CRESPr) on it, test the cell to see if it was truly altered on the genetic level, and then multiply it ad infinitum.

If Sangamo had "ok" results with shitty engrafment % on non-stem cells, imagine what this technology can achieve with Stem Cells at 100%.

Looks like we have a winner.

Hopefully the people at Sangamo, Calimmune, CoH all looking into this.
