I drank forbidden juice!
« on: May 11, 2009, 09:48:58 pm »
I accidentally took two gulps of grapefruit juice. I'm on Truvada, Norvir, and Lexiva. This happened about 6 hours after taking it. Should I be worried?

Hi Pop,

No, a one-off isn't going to make any difference. It's just not something you'd want to drink every day.

LOL - forbidden juice! ;D

You'll be fine.

I'm eating 1/2 of a grapefruit right now, with my middle finger extended to the world.  Coffee and a ciggie will cost you extra.

What my doc told me:

1. grapefruit juice does NOT lower the concentration of your meds
2. grapefruit juice CAN make that concentration go UP, so you can experience
more side effects or stronger side effects, that's all

(up to 1L is ok)

I drank 1L of grapefruit LIGHT juice and had diarrhea, but
I think it must've been artificial sweeteners and not higher concentration of Kaletra in my bloodstream.

Thank you everyone. I also talked to my doctor and basically told me how silly I was being. Just how its so prevalent, ya know. The warnings.

Thank you all again for your replies. Sorry I took so long to reply

I love anything forbidden..especially juice  ;)

My doc said not to worry much about Grapefruit juice, especially if I'm just eating the fruit.  I eat grapefruits a lot with breakfast, which is when I take my meds (reyetaz, norvir, truvada) and never had a problem.  I think the issue is really only with Norvir, at least according to the interaction tool on this site, and if you're just taking a boosting dose, I don't think there's anything to worry about.

So juice up!
11/9/06 = #$%^&!
sometime early Dec 2006:
CD4 530 20%/VL >250,000 (&*$$%!!)
started Reyataz300mg/Norvir/Truvada 12-27-06.
1/30/07 CD4 540 30%/VL <400
4/07 CD4 600+ 33%/VL <50
6/9/07 CD4 720 37%/VL <50
10/15/07 CD4 891 (!) %? VL <50
1/2010 CD4 599 (37%) VL<50 (drop due to acute HCV)
9/2010 - looks like HCV is gone for good! And I'm finally drinking again, thank GOD
2013 - considering a switch to Stribild. but I love my Kidneys (but I hate farting all the time!)...
June 2013 - switched to Stribild.  so far so good...

I ate a grapefruit this morning, well, half of one.

It is the first time I have had a grapefruit in more than a decade.

It was yummy, but the taste was somehow different. Then I remembered the last time I ate a grapefruit was before I quit smoking.  ::)

Now that I am off the PIs, I am going to give them a shot again. I do live grapefruit.

HUGS,

Mark
