Receptive Anal Sex w/ undetectable individual
« on: June 30, 2014, 01:13:54 pm »
Hi There,

This is my first time posting to this forum, so I apologize if this questions has been asked before.  I had receptive anal sex with an undetectable person without a condom for about 5 minutes this past weekend.  I was immediately prescribed a PEP regimen, and started the medicine 24 hours after exposure.  The partner did not ejaculate in me, although I've heard that doesn't necessarily matter for hiv transmission.  We also used my spit as lubricant.  I didn't come here to get chastised - I know I should have used a condom, and I know I should have known his status.  He sent me his test info to show his undetectable status, and I'm planning on finishing the whole PEP regimen for 28 days.  I've been told that because he is undetectable, I will be ok, but that PEP is smart just to be sure that I don't get HIV.  I've read the most recent study about serodiscordant couples who are undetectable and how they didn't transfer HIV to their partner, but I'm just curious if anyone has any first hand experience w/ that, and if they think PEP is necessary for me.  Thanks in advance.

It doesn't really matter what anyone thinks about your choices, as you have already made them.  While you did have a risk, you really don't know if this guy is undetectable or not, so PEP is a valid option for this risk.  Since you are on PEP, you must wait 6 weeks AFTER your PEP ends, to test and then at 3 months to confirm the results.

I really think you are going to be fine.  PEP has proven to be effective in preventing infection, so complete the course and then test.

Joe
