appendicitis
« on: October 22, 2010, 03:48:46 pm »
Wednesday morning at 4 am i woke up to throbbing pains in my abdomen. After a couple hours of pain with no relief i decided i better go to the ER to have it checked out. After some lab work and a CT scan with contrast, the doc came back and said my appendix was inflamed and i will need to go have surgery to have it removed.
Has anyone been thru this while they still had a low CD4 count? The surgery was Laparoscopic. The doctor said there was no perforation and the surgery went well.I am supposed to go get a new CD4 count and VL on Monday.I'm on Flagyl, bactrim and azithromycin to keep infection away. How will this affect my numbers?I was still able to take my reyataz truvada and norvir on time.
I'm just wondering if anyone has been thru this and trying to figure out what to expect.I was sent home last night.I'm a little sore from the surgery but other than that i feel ok at the moment and no fever.

Hello Cwbyway,

My personal thoughts are, that your're going to be fine. I've had hernia surgery, when my numbers were low, but I also wasn't on meds at the time.

Try not to be concerned, about the labs, that will be drawn on Monday. I  know that's it always easy for someone else to say "don't be concerned", but at the same time I can understand your concerns.  I've been there, with the very low CD-4 and percentage, I think that the surgery, will have very little, if any impact on your numbers.

Looking at your current trend, Your % is going up, your viral load is coming down, and your t-cell count is slowly on the rise. So, the numbers are all heading in the right direction. Your're on the right track.

The main thing is, you did the right thing, by getting yourself in the ER, and getting yourself checked out, and getting things taken care, as soon as you noticed a problem.

As stated,  you are still taking your Reyataz, truvada, and Norvir on time, and hopefully your taking your antibiotics, as scheduled.  Don't miss any of these doses, and make sure your on time, when taking them. If anything seems out of the ordinary, just make sure you report this to the doctor as soon as possible.

The main thiing right now, is getting yourself the proper rest that's needed, and getting the proper nutritional diet.  The body heals the best, when it is at rest. And, it also heals the best, when you feed it properly.

Your going to have a bumpy road ahead of you, getting the CD4% and t-cells back up ( I've been there I know, the struggle !! ) but you'll get there !! Give yourself some time.
But, Once again, just take things slow and easy for a while. Sometimes you just have to slow the pace down !! Listen to your body !

By the way, Welcome !!

Ray

Hope you're feeling better. The surgery shouldn't have any effect on your numbers. I had a chunk of a lung cut out 2 days before they found I had  CD4 <10. I'm still kicking around.

I had a temporary dip in my CD4s when I had a minor surgery a few years ago. Don't be surprised if it happens to you and don't worry about it either. It's temporary and normal to have a post-op dip. Here's what my numbers looked like before and after my op...

2005-08-02 VL 00,000 CD4 732 28%
2005-10-12 VL 00,000 CD4 320 25% minor op previous day
2005-11-08 VL 10,200 CD4 786 28%

As you can see, less than a month after my dip my numbers were back up to what they had been previously.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
